The closest to the G that Land Rover makes is the Defender and its not available in the US. I guess price wise the Range Rover is the closest but I wouldn't take it off road. Its a nice luxury SUV though.

yes, i tested a defender at a NJ dealer around the same time i got my first CLK.
talk about a hard ride and an austere interior... perfect for a self-depriving ascetic. but it seemed entirely capable.
ijust returned from the local S FL rover dealer, where i saw both the 2005 LR3 and the 2006 NA range rover sport. the sport is a heck of a good looking ride, very similar to standard range but diminuitive. there was no supercharged sport yet on the lot, so no way to get a sense of the muscular version. but i really liked it from the curb. heading back there during the next few days, perhaps early saturday, to drive around in both.
about going off road, i'd be quite careful with the G55k on the factory tires. regardless, the only off-roading i could foresee would be curb-jumping and flooded street fording during S FL weather evacs. those conditions are the only reason i'm even contemplating acquisition of a capable SUV also usable during regular conditions.
do you think the rovers would not be unwise possibilities?
