Both purchased as Starmark ( 2003 G55 10K miles ) and CPO ( 2005 G55K 46K miles ).
G55/G55K as solid as any S-Class.
Absurd to think at the price the posters are paying for a new delivery G55K, that you would humor yourself into believing that it should have annoyances as you are graciously accepting as "part of the cache of ownership"

Almost six years of daily driving a G55 and G55K with no "rattle /creek (sic ) / squeak or what name you want to give it".
Both purchased as Starmark ( 2003 G55 10K miles ) and CPO ( 2005 G55K 46K miles ).
G55/G55K as solid as any S-Class.

Trust me, I'm not humoring myself into believing anything but the norm. Since 1985 I've owned six G-Wagons, (W460, 61, 63) and unlike your experience mine and most every owner I've spoken with has not had a quiet one. Further, I've discussed this issue with everyone possible including, GWagon USA, MB dealer service writers, techs, factory service reps and lastly a production manager during my trip to the factory in Graz in 2006. Short and sweet....The G is a military vehicle which has been adapted to a civilian cross-country vehicle via cosmetic upgrades with little changes to its chassis or production methods since 1979. The G is anything but an S-Class and anyone expecting S-Class or any other MB Class ride quality is seriously fooling themselves.
Wasn't discussing "ride quality" , so not sure why you even bring it up.
The discussion is about the "build quality"
Once the G-wagen morphed into the current W463 chassis and was officially imported by Mercedes, it became a bit more then a "military vehicle".
Early cars that you owned lacked the sound deadening, interior improvements that was put into the later model W463.
There are noticeable differences in the suspension tuning between the G55 and the G55K.
Biggest problem is with the tires in low ambient temp conditions.
They take a while to become "round"
A vehicle that lists for $100K + will only exhibit the "military vehicle" qualities that you accept, if it the pre delivery inspection failed to tighten up any loose bits and pieces.
Any noise can be isolated at any time and corrected either by lubrication or tightening whatever has come loose.
So are you saying that it "rattles" as it comes off the line at Graz?
Not such good quality control if it does ?

A long time ago, I had a jeep grand cherokee limited v8. That RATTLED. The G doesn't not rattle. I have the feeling people confuse the meaning of rattle in the G with something else.

Do you feel it's the norm to have to continually lubricate or adjust anything on a 100K + vehicle in order to have a quiet cabin? Unfortunately in the case of the G the price doesn't automatically dictate as you put it, 'solid as an S-Class'. As you may be aware unlike any other MB Class vehicle the G production line is not your typical automated or robotic line. For a better understanding reference, 'tolerances and fit'. Nearly everything is hand fitted and finished and no two are exactly alike. I believe once you understand the G's production process and or visit the factory you'll have a better understanding of what to expect or not.

And your point being....????
I not in the category of "to know what to expect"
Not expecting, owning two G55 for about seven years...
Better to state "I know what I experience" on a daily basis.
I lube the doors about once a year..no different then the four other Mercs that I presently own.
Basic maintenance.
Why should any metal on metal contact be treated any differently...
"Rattles" what do manufacturing tolerances have to do with something that is loose ?
"No two exactly alike"....applies to even robotic manufactured production line vehicles.
Any mechanical assembly is built within a "design tolerance"...which are cumulative when mating parts are joined together.
Why would anybody with a rational mind pay over $100K to expect hand built vehicle to rattle, squeek, and have mystery noises ?
Doesn't make sense to me..
But you apparently have the answer as you visited the factory...
Possibly my two G55's were assembled when Hans and Fritz were having a great day and not hung over?

Very viscose and non staining..
It will also inhibit water entry into the hinges and prevent rust.
The exposed hinges will have a tendcy to rust if not maintained.

And the answer is "Hinge lubrication is part of the Merc service schedule."

That or anything similar will work...
Sprays as a yellowish white liquid.
It will penetrate the hinge assembly.
Just wipe off any excess.
All you have to do to see the necessity of keeping the hinges lubricated is to look at the hinge design.
It's a basic exposed hinge and if not kept lube will begin to rust
