G55 Muffler Cost

Does anyone know why the passenger side muffler w/ pipe (463-490-44-21) cost 3X more then the driver side muffler w/ pipe (463-490-43-21]? My local Merc Parts Dept have them listed for $1,340 and $400. I found other Merc dealer parts dept selling then for ~30% off so will order and get them shipped but scratching my head as to why the passenger side cost that much more.

I bought my 2008 G55 in late January and the previous owners were in NYC and PA so the Tips and mufflers look bad. Going to take off the side steps, which look bad as well (weathered), add rock sliders, which is why I am looking to replace the muffler because they will show more without the side steps.

if you’re patient you can probably track down a used set.

How about just polishing/cleaning the mufflers and tips? Or since you're adding rock sliders, just painting the muffler flat black and cutting off the tips/replacing them to something more discrete to hide them away? Since your truck was a NYC/PA truck its whole life, the flanges/bolts will probably be rusted pretty badly.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion Shiann. You are correct that the flangers/bolts are rusted pretty bad. Will need to think things through a little more because the nut (4634920072) That connects to the bolts are $29 a piece. Have to get six of those if I decide to replace both mufflers.

My observations come from the fact that mine, too, are very very very rusted. You can probably source stainless steel hardware on McMaster-Carr for definitely a lot less than $29/each, but the stud will still be normal steel. If I ever get to this, I would cut the OEM rusted hardware off and replace with SS.

My plan is to replace the 'catback' with custom setup using a high quality large aftermarket muffler, with tips tucked up in the frame to gain back that ground clearance, and maybe a valved cutout. I can't seem to find a good muffler solution for purchase for the G55 that isn't insanely expensive. MBRP makes a set for ~$1k that tucks nicely, but apparently it makes the M113k insanely loud as it was designed for the G63/550 turbo motors.

I also plan to buy or make my own sliders/side steps, but that's way off in the future.

Whatever path you choose, let us know and share the experience! Half the fun of having one of these iconic trucks!
