not worth that much
There is a 62 220 SE for sale on evilbay right now for 4900 that looks to be in better shape than that one, and the 220's used wood instead of bakelite (plastic) for interior trim. I called my dad, and he thinks the 219 was a bit shorter and cheaper alternative to the 220's of the day, sort of in between the 190 and the 220. They might have some sort of cult following that makes it worth more than a 220, but I would get a 220 instead. JMO, but everyone has their own taste and thinks differently. I am restoring a 61 220 at the moment, it's not a pontoon, but it will be nice in a few years. Most of the expensive pontoons are converts (cabriolet's - sorry), but I don't think the sedans are worth anything like that unrestored, Might check out a club event for a bit more info. There is a very nice condition 57 218 for sale on Hemmings right now for 13K - all service records from new, drives well etc. Hemmings is probably the best place to get pricing on these.
Good luck - it would be a cool car if you did, and it's all a matter of what you think it's worth to you - I have about 4x what my street mustang is worth into it, but I just bought a new Winter Bros rear end for it - nother dumb move, but that's okay with me.

I would like to stick to something in the 50's... I like the ponton body style a lot. The 219 front end is shorter than the 220's but from the A-pillar back they are the same.
I just think that the guy with the 219 thinks that he has something thats worth a lot and I also think that someone has told him the car is worth a lot. I offered him $2500 for the car and I would pay the DMV fees, since he owes on penalties. I am also looking for one with the webasto roof that folds back.I am also familiar with hemmings, its a great site. I have been doing my homework on all the models. Something will fall into place when its meant to be I guess. Thanks for all of your info though.

have look on mbzponton.org and join the IPOG yahoo group. You will find all you need plus cars for sale.
$2500 is about right for an unrestored car, the 220's are worth more. 2.2 straight six, the 220a has a single carb, 220S is twin carb and SE is fuel injected. The 220S/SE also came in cabriolet and coupe and these are the expensive ones.
Search Mercedes ponton in youtube, there are lots of vids.

Before seeing what you offered him, i would have said $2000-$3000, so offering him $2500 is a good offer. 10k for that car...if it's in good running condition, etc maybe....maybe
