220 seb coupe
W111 220 seb 1963 TYRE SIZE

Can anyone tell me the correct tyre for my 220SEb coupe? Its currently got 165 80 13 but it seems to result in low gearing. I looked up the spec for the original and the tyre is listed as 725 13 which corresponds to a diameter (height) of 25.74 cm while the 165 80 13 is only 24.4 cm. To get the equivalent modern radial I need something like 185 80 14 which is 25.5 cm diameter. Can anyone advise?? Thanks alot, Hugh

Have you tried manufacturer websites, like Goodyear, Michelin, and Pirelli? If you have the original size as you said, you should stick with it. Older cars have worse brakes / acceleration than modern ones, so you don't want to go bigger.

Also, what do you mean by 'lower gearing'? If its a manual, you'll have a 'granny gear' in case you're at a stop going uphill or with 3 passengers inside and some weight in the trunk.
If you mean 'speedometer', I wouldn't worry about it since most cars are off a little.

Hugh, I think I bought your car! I was hoping for 14s, but if it has 13s I will deal with it. The existing tires look good in the pics. Upsizing is a good idea in most any auto application.

I use http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi and was told 25 to 25.5 inch diameter is ideal for W111. I am excited to take ownership, shipping is all arranged.

This is what 14s look like.... If I remember the exact size I will post it.

My car came with 13" 80-series. After looking at the TRAILER tires available in that size, I looked at 14s and 15s. Although the tire models get better with size, the wheel choices are slim, and I don't want someone's crappy old bundt cake wheels.

So, I'm getting 16", and I already have 2 new 205/55-16 here. Only $60/ea for 2 more Nokians, and a modest $400 for wheels, I'm on budget for $500-ish for a nice set. at 25.5 inches, I think it's a perfect set-up.
