Feedback on Tele-Aid

From the Mercedes-Benz USA web-site:

One push of the SOS button connects you with a Mercedes-Benz Emergency Response Specialist who will summon help to your precise location, pinpointed by satellite, and stay on the line until help arrives. If an air bag or seat belt Emergency Tensioning Retractor deploys, Tele Aid activates automatically and an Emergency Response Specialist calls you. If you're unable to respond, emergency personnel are summoned to your location.

The wrench button connects you to a Roadside Assistance Specialist who will know where you are and what model you're driving, even before you say a word. Help is on the way.

Got a burning question about your new Mercedes-Benz? The i button connects you to a Customer Assistance Center Representative, available to answer any questions you may have, from how to set the buttons on your radio to the compression ratio of your engine. If you're lost, they can even give you verbal directions to your destination.

Connecting Mercedes-Benz owners to emergency aid, Roadside Assistance and information is just the beginning. Your Tele Aid system offers several added benefits including Remote Door Unlock, Anti-Theft Customer Alarm Notification, Stolen Vehicle Tracking and Route Guidance Assistance.

Has anyone used any of these features?
Do you think you will renew at $240 annually?

This service was free for the first year and then they attempted to charge me without asking the $240 for year 2. When I called to cancel the service, they offered to reduce the price to $180 for 15 months. I offered $120 and they said no. Since this service is similar to the ON-STAR I wonder what they charge. I doubt they are charging a customer $240 a year for a new Impala....I look at it as insurance and I think I pay enough for that. A good cell phone should be a good back up.

According to the OnStar website, their current fees are:

$199/yr for the "Safety and Security Plan", which only cover emergency services, roadside assistance, and remote door unlock.

$399/yr for the "Premium Service Plan" which adds Concierge Services, Information Services, Ride Assist, and Route Support.

They say you also pay "wireless minutes" but nowhere on their web site could I find how much.

Personal Calling (where you use OnStar as a phone) begins at $30 for 30 minutes or $45 for 100 minutes.

Based on those numbers, the MB Tele-Aid is very competitive.

Though I would not get either. Personally I think these services will be competitive when they drop annual fees (or lower them substantially) and then charge a flat fee per call. For example, if I knew "Route Support" was $3, I would not feel so concerned calling when I need it. Sometimes getting directions is worth $3. Other times it is not.

I've used the service twice. Once each for my new Benzs each time I registered. But that's about it.

Hmm, come to think of it, I'd better use it again to update my record now that I received my license plate numbers.
