This a quote from the article:
"Motor Trend's Car of the Year award seeks to recognize overall significance, competitiveness within a market segment, and value for money. In making the selection, the editors evaluate many factors, including styling and design; fit, finish and materials; engineering and technology; interior; safety; performance; and value."
I am actually appalled by this considering that the car has many reported problems/complaints by the owners. Check out the thread at Edmunds.com on "Problems and Solutions" for the G35.[U]

Car of the year awards are like prom queens, stats and looks count the most. Don't confuse advertising with reality.

vraa - If "your" van didn't have any problems, doesn't mean that somebody else's didn't. I'm sure that there are customers of G35 that have yet to experience a problem.
karl k - I've read something about the sedan version having its hose (something to do with fuel) poorly attached in some of the cars, which was the reason for them having a recall to reattach them more securely.

The new Z, G35 Coupe and Sedan have received unanimous reviews from for-profit and not-for-profit independent rating organizations.
The new design approach is a breath of fresh air, soon to be copied by many automotive mfrs.
Additionally, the low cost is particularly attractive and combined with the renowned Japanese reputation for QUALITY, -- the new Z, G35 Coupe and Sedans are destined to be WINNERS from the get-go!!

I'm not sure if the link will work ... but the G35 owners at Edmund's forum can speak for themselves better than I can. The thread is "G35 Owners: Problems and Solutions." There are more than 300 posts since April '02. I was doing my research on the G35 until September and read all the posts until then as I was seriously considering the car. I was impressed by the car's styling as well as the powertrain. I was bothered however by what I read in the forum.
I decided to purchase the E320 instead. Did I make a mistake? Hopefully, not ...

Saint Vir - tnx for the link!
While there are 300 posts, only a few relate to problems and many relate to noises, like a/c noises that were fixed.
A lot of posts relate to "how do I...??" - - and some are humorous, like resetting the compass:
"I could not find the region setting either. In order to clear the blinking -----, follow the instructions in the manual.
You need to drive in a couple of circles with the AC and Radio Off. Once you do that it is calibrated and it will work again. I am not sure what is going on with not being able to set the region." ...of course, this is bogus advice -- hahaha!
So, you have the finnicky and bonafide complaints in this Edmund's link, as well as positive and humorous posts. I did not see one problem that exceeded the ones I experienced with 4 MBs, which were all taken care of by MB service, some efficiently and some required as many as 5 visits over a period of 4 months.
Saint Vir -
You made a good choice in your selection of the new E320. It would have been better, if your selection would have been the new E500 -- simply awesome!
