the only real benefit is that these BabySmart seats are equipped with BabySmart technology - exclusive to Mercedes-Benz - which automatically deactivates front passenger air bags when properly installed in the front passenger seat of system-equipped vehicles. *

* Many Mercedes-Benz vehicles from MY 1998 through 2003, select models from 2004 through 2006, and current G-Class vehicles are equipped with BabySmart. Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with BabySmart have a passive device that recognizes the presence of a BabySmart equipped child seat when properly installed in the front passenger seat and deactivates the passenger front air bag (check your vehicle's Operator's Manual or labels located on the sides of your dashboard to verify).

There are three types of BabySmart child seats:
  • BabySafe Plus Infant Seat - 0-15 months (up to 29 pounds)
  • DUO Plus Toddler Seat - 1-4 years (20-40 pounds)
  • KID Booster Seat - 3 1/2-12 years (40-79 pounds)

I thought all cars had an "underweight passenger" shut off for the front bag these days?

I strongly rec. that you install whatever brand you buy in the rear and use the built-in LATCH attachments for baby seats. Doubt MB make their seats - just gets a generic one built with its logo.

these days yes... but for MB's between 1998 and 2006 very few select models have that feature. The passive sensor built into the BabySmart seats shuts off the airbags of those cars that do not have the "underweight passenger" sensors. BabySmart seats are pretty much irrelevant for the new Mercedes-Benz. And I agree completely, that baby car seats should be placed in the rear seats and fastened with the LATCH system.

Thanks Saprissa.

Congratulations. I've been into baby seats lately, for our first granddaughter.

Man, have they changed since my kids time! My DIL researched them to death and decided on a specific brand, but I forget which one now. It got top rating from every source. Got top rating from my wallet too.
