Daimler's Mercedes-Benz Sued Over Navigation Patent (Update1)
By William McQuillen
July 8 (Bloomberg) -- Daimler AG's U.S. Mercedes-Benz unit was accused in a lawsuit of violating a patent used in the automobile navigation systems of its 2007-2009 model vehicles.
WordLogic Corp. said it sued Daimler today in federal court in Portland, Oregon, seeking an 8.6 percent royalty rate for the product, which sells for as much as $5,000 each. WordLogic also asked to have damages tripled for ``willful'' infringement, and it requested an order barring further infringement, according to a company a statement.
``We contacted them in 2005, and they have been aware of'' the infringement, Frank Evanshen, chief executive officer of Vancouver-based WordLogic, said today in a phone interview.
Evanshen said the court would have to determine how many vehicles use the infringed technology and the total damages.
A Mercedes-Benz USA representative in Montvale, New Jersey, didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
WordLogic rose 4 cents to $1.78 in over-the-counter trading. The stock has gained 11 percent this year.
