Those are the different model types that Mercedes makes. Go to www.mbusa.com for a complete rundown on the different models.

As far as the true meaning of the letters themselves, like the old one had, I'm not sure if they do have a meaning.

I can only say that the S designation in the S class stands for "Sonder Klasse" which I think means something like "special class"
It used to be that S class cars had the SE or SEL designation which meant S for "SonderKlasse" E for "Einspritzung" (or something like that which means "fuel injected" and L would stand for "Lange" (don't kill me if I misspelled the word) which would mean Long version.

All please correct me if I am wrong but at least it made sense to me.

The only definite one I know is the SLK. I remember when it was introduced, Mercedes said it stands for Sportlich Leicht Kompakt (Sporty, Light, Compact). You could assume that the SL must be Sporty and Light, but it's a heavy car, so there goes that theory.

Translation

I'm pretty sure this question was covered in a thread awhile back, so doing a search from the control panel would probably get you an answer. Meanwhile, CLK translates from German to English as: C=coupe, L=light, and K=either klein which means small or kurz which means short.

mbtech208, I always thought SL means "Sportlich-Leicht"/sporty&light because the old Mercedes sports cars back in the 50s (like the 300SLR etc.) were in fact sporty and light?
Even though this is not exactly how it is today...
