What's the proper name for the "star" emblem?

Just wondering. Is there a specific name for the piece found on the hood? Or for the "star" itself?

PS: How much is a replacement (2003 C240) if someone steals mine?

I have heard the hood star called all of the following:

Hood Star
Hood Ornament
Hood Emblem
Hood Mascot

I don't know the "official" Mercedes phraseology.

One of the on-line parts dealers -- I think it was http://www.thepartsbin.com/ -- gave me a price of $16.00 sans shipping.

In Germany it is called Mercedes-Stern (Mercedes-Star), this is also how Mercedes Benz Germany officially calls the star.

I prefer to see it as my "cross-hairs" as I am bulleting down the highway. But seriously, the Mercedes dealer in LA calls it the 3-point star. People have stopped stealing the stars since RunDMC stopped wearing them. If you do need to buy one though you can always find them on ebay. Here is one link out of many to one right now for pretty cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=6769.

From Mercedes-

Their illustrated history book is titled"The Star and Laurel".
The hood emblem's ring actually was a laurel wreath at one time, from Benz &Co's emblem. The star is from Gottlieb Daimler, symbolizing the then-foreseen growth in three directions-air,sea,
and land. When the two companies merged in 1926,their symbols merged as well.Go back far enough in history, and the star's ring is indeed a wreath.

Using the star

as a targeting reticle won't work very well,unless you're targeting the road's right shoulder....Could be useful,however,on a preemptive strike in a speed-trap.:p
