How do you check the transmission oil?

I have a '98 CLK 320 automatic, and I noticed my gears aren't shifting properly lately. My manual says that because the transmission is not something that is to be regularly checked they have omitted the dipstick.
I have moved out of town and the dealership I have dealt with for years is 3 hours away. Is there any way around this? I was just wondering where it is and also, what type of transmission oil would you use?
Thanks!
