$65.00!? Hell no, I got mine FROM THE DEALER for $19.00 plus tax. You can put it on yourself, just ask your service advisor or a tech to show you how, I've done two of them so far, one for mine and one for my sister's car.

I love the immature plans of booby trapping the hood star to punish theives. Generally, the law does not favor booby traps because they are indiscriminate in the injury they cause and the use of potentially deadly force is not appropriate for the mere defense of property.
Picture this . . . you're being sued by a person injured by your trap . . . sitting in front of a jury . . . that is listening to the fact that you set a trap . . . to protect the $30 emblem . . . on your Mercedes . . .

8 valve caps (stolen twice off my driveway)
the "C" off my trunk (at some mall --- going to debadge entirely now)
upright hood star (went flat badge)
two door panels keyed on our 8 month old Toyota Highlander (still need to get an estimate)
yes, all these off our driveway. the keying was overnight. the rest during the day.

This requires governmental intervention!
Get out the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - RCMP - to curb these terrorist acts against private property.

Hope you gotta good memory there guy and not forget when you have to open the hood yourself!
I think the majority of hood stars stolen, or better yet, ripped-yanked off the hood, at least back in the late 60's and 70's were by jealous young wantabees, and hippie followers of Janis Joplin, as this star represented the "pease" sign. Also many figured you were rich, and they were not, and your not gonna drive home without feeling their stab at you by their anti-establishment protest!
Today, I'm not really sure, but it may have carried over as a thing to do based from other reasons from more than thirty years ago.

Some kids do it because they just think they're cool when they do that. An old 1988 Plymouth Voyager has a star on it. And these punks ripped it off in front of my father, while he was in the car. And a 2000 Hyundai Elantra emblem, stolen after a week of getting it. Seriously, why?

mercedes should make their stars collapsable like the ones on the rolls royce cars. on the rolls royce, you can press a button to make the flying lady hood ornament disappear.

on my old e-class I had the mercedes emblem on the back, almost stolen. a guy tried to steal it, but it broke in half, no damage to the paint just half a merecedes emblem on the trunk . Also someone tried to steal the front hood emblem, it just bent and we could never get it back in the proper place.

My MB hood star was just stolen in NYC!! (43rd and 9th)
Does anyone have one for sale or know where I can find one without going to the stealership?
Thanks

I have been lucky (knock wood) but my neighbor had hers stolen off of her E320 in Wildwood NJ. Apparently they make nice necklaces when wore around your neck with a big fat gold chain.

Out Of Control!!
I remember in the 80s, MB Stars were stolen quite often because the kids (and adults) were attaching them to their gold rope chains. You know, the same kids who wore the LV baseball caps.
Anyway, I didn't think it was a big issue nowadays, especially since a new star is not that expensive.
Personally, I've never had an issue with my star, not even on the Mercedes I had back in the 80s.

Mine was popped off my trunk (complete with scratches) about a month ago.
I'm still angry. I had no idea it was 1985! My mech is picking up my baby tomorrow to fix the situation. And I won't stop being angry until I get my car back fixed. It really is so low-class. And dated.

I removed mine a week after I bought my car but when I was growing up, my parents had theirs stolen over and over again. The last time my mom's star was stolen, it bent the crap out of the hood and had to be fixed. The stars should have a lower threshhold to break away so there is little or no hood damage when stolen. These things are cheap to replace compared to other hood ornaments.
I had a S-type Jag and the leaper was stolen 3x's before I went with the flat badge because the leapers were $300 each. They break away cleanly so there was never body damage. The first time mine was stolen, the POS who ripped it off and laid it upright on the ground in front of the car.
