Smile Thinking about an older 240D Y, N??

My daughter and her boyfriend are looking for a inexpensive car to use for getting around town, work and college. I found a 1979 240 D. It has 200,000 miles on it. It runs great, and is owned by a local busniness that used it as a " secretary's car " They are the original owner and have kept it up well. There is no rust and it looks like new. They are asking $1,200 for it. The price is certainly within her range. My only concern is, I have read these engines will run forever, but what about the transmission? I don't want her to buy it and 2 weeks later have it die. Also, the current owners said it will need glow plugs. That does not bother me. So, to old stay away?? Or decent old car go for it??
