weird

just changed the batteries in my remote key for a 98 w210 e class and was playing around with the remote window up / down feature on the key. as i was later unsure if the car was unlocked or not, i decided to try locking the car from inside the house. so i stood at the lounge window and pressed 'lock'. nothing, the glass must have obstructed the signal or most likely i was out of range or both. but i remembered a bbc top gear program where jeremy clarkson, the shows host, demonstrated a trick with the mb smart key, where you could extend the range of the key by simply placing the end of the key directly against your skull and pressing unlock/lock buttons. so i held the key against my skull and pressed lock. bingo- the lights flashed the car was locked. this is very weird. anyone know why holding the key against your skull extends the range?

cheers

omg that is sooooo wierd! I tried that too and was able to lock/unlock the doors from alot farther then what it's capable of normally. I'm gonna start doing that, I hate how I have to get up really close to get it to work.

Aren't the smartkeys Infra Red and not Radio Frequency or is it just IR for the ignition switch?

Interesting. Thanks for clearing that up.

A bucket on wheels
dswildfire is completely right the body is a big giant antenea and putting the smartkey to your skull or under your throat prolongs the distance it works

Not as bad as catching 75,000 volts through a spark-plug wire terminal.....

For the E320s - Why this feature

What is the purpose to have the car unlocked at such a great distance vs lowering the windows/sunroof at such close distances?

This feature should have been reversed, just like the lock/unlock switch on the center console!!!

If you are going to your car and it is hot outside, you want to be furthest away to open your windows to let the most warm air out, while maintaining the doors locked (IMO). Being a NYCer, I can't see the need to unlock the doors, unless i'm near the car.

Is it just me?

there is a reason why they still use the IR for the windows, its just that they made the RF for the lock/unlock b/c thats what most cars have. we just have to find out exactly why they still have the IR for the windows. and btw the lock/unlock uses the RF and the IR just in case the RF doesnt work in areas that has too much other RF in the area.
