Mercedes seems to limit diesel options in USA.Wonder why no diesel options offered for G-Wagen and S-Class,which are available elsewhere.

Various reasons. First, because it is not cost effective to have those 2 vehicles EPA certified for a small market. Those 2 models are the upper class buyers of Mercedes. Usually, in those very small markets - the price of gasoline is not a problem for them. Although, there were previous years when diesel S class was available in the US - i think that was just experimental.

Still interesting that BMW opted to have a 5-series diesel with a large engine and Mercedes goes for a small one on the E-class (and hides the price between ripoff package pricing for the sedan).
