Wheel Bolts, what were they thinking and why haven't they changed?

I need to vent, I have three german cars, 1999 E320, 2008 BMW X3, 2005 Jetta, all, as everyone knows have wheel lug bolts as opposed to studs and lug nuts. I am venting now because on my 320 I cannot get three of them off on the left front wheel and one of those is now broken. What makes these manufacturers keep this design? If i had studs and nuts breaking the studs is no bid deal, but shearing a bolt when you cannot readily get at it is a nightmare, not to mention putting wheels on without the studs is a total PIA. They need to change this archaic design.
I feel better but still have a lot of drilling to do. Argggggg.

I had this issue with my 1999 240 Kompressor what a pain, but i quickly learned after that. I bought a torque wrench was worth the money lol never had any issues since.

I feel your pain drilling them out is a B*tch

It's because retards use the impact on them instead of following what MB states. I've completely stopped hand in my car over and bring loose wheels because every time before its so impossibly tight there is no way they followed 120nm.

Thinking now seriously about having HRE make me custom wheels since its been confirmed that my replacement wheels will now take 10 weeks.
I do not plan on lowering the car at all.

Is it stupid to stay with 19" wheels and not do 20"?
I do plan on going wider. Maybe 8" front and 9.5 rear
