Buying a 05-06 E320 CDI
Hello,
I'm looking at buying an 05-06 E320 CDI and would appreciate any thoughts or recommendactions here.
I currently own a 13' VW Passat TDI and a 750+ hp 02' Chevy 2500 HD Duramax diesel. VW is buying back my Passat TDI in the next few weeks. I'll be walking away with $16k and will need a replacement DD. Passat TDI seems cheaply made although I average 45 mpg on my daily commute.
With that said, in the preliminary research I've done thus far, the 05-06 CDI in line 6 w/iron block seems much preferred over later Bluetec versions. Can someone confirm if the CDI only has a muffler & cat, no DPF?
Are there serious issues I need to look out for when buying? Are the CDI's prone to any failures? Are they subject to the balance shaft issue? How do these engines fare if wanting to buy with approx 100k? What's the longevity like with EGR system, injectors , high pressure fuel pump, etc?
Would buying a CDI with 100k miles as a replacement DD to the Passat TDI be a wise choice (paying cash) or a maintenance nightmare & run other direction?
How about engine mods for better mileage & power? Custom tuning, injectors, fuel pump, exhaust, EGR delete...?
