Anyone actually appreciate remote start?
I notice a lot of Mercedes-Benz clients seem to get all excited about using their remote start feature to "warm up their car" during the cold winter months. After using it myself the first few weeks after receiving my new E-class I kind of fail to see the point. Cars need to be driven to really warm up after a long night in the bitter cold; 10 min of simply idling doesn't exactly get the car toasty. Instead, as a bit of a eco-conscious nut, I think of what that 10 min of idling exhaust is actually doing for the environment, the harm prolonged idling can cause the engine, the wasted fuel, and albeit as negligible as it may be the ware on the engine in entirely stopping and immediately starting back up again upon unlocking the car.
This seems like a lot of down sides as a trade off for something that doesn't even deliver what it promises, the convenience of a warm vehicle to arrive in. This isn't exactly a Mercedes-specific complaint either of course. Just wondering if anyone out there actually enjoys this feature? Do others find the 10 min run time sufficient to actually warm the vehicle? Thanks in response for any input.
