Price Per Hour for Mechanic - Adelaide, Australia

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2002 W203 C200 Kompressor. I've been taking it to an indie since I got it and it started off okay price wise, I can't fault the job they do on the car though. Lately it seems like they are over charging me massively for labour. I was wondering if other people out there think this is fishy / over charging way to much. Just want to make sure I'm not judging them incorrectly.

Just yesterday I got some work done and I will give the amount they charged for labour on each individual job in AUD and USD converted. Remember this is the charges JUST for the labour, not including the parts.

Replace Spark Plugs
AUD 129.45
USD 88.9

Replace Brake Fluid
AUD 113.27
USD 77.78

Replace Fuel Filter
AUD 129.45
USD 88.87

Like seriously, replacing brake fluid required 113.27 AUD labour, thats insane.

Please tell me I'm not crazy.

I have /absolutely/ no experience with this, but I honestly have to say that, knowing other MB prices, I would expect the cost to be higher.

Well, considering that about the only difference between an E-Class MB A and B service is changing the brake fluid, and considering that that is usually $100-$300 higher, maybe not.

We're treading on thin water there. Can't help you. ;-)

haha dam. I didn't expect that at all. Just making sure you realise that is prices just for labour, not including price for the new brake fluid, new spark plugs and new fuel filter. Still find it hard to believe. Who would of thought changing brake fluid would take 30-60 minutes.

Actual time spent may have little to do with it. My dad was an auto body repairman and adjuster, and they use standardized tables and listings for labor for the various jobs. I think these take into account every possible problem that could occur, and they usually beat the estimated time by quite a bit. Like the plumber that I hired to reseat two toilets: his standard charge was almost $600 (everywhere I called had standard charges, not hourly charges). I really needed it done, so paid it (in advance). It took him 45 minutes. Now /that/ is a good hourly wage!

Fair enough. Thanks for the information. Didn't expect that at all. Nethertheless I might call around some other MB indies next time something pops up just to make sure I'm getting a competitive price.

I also have just had the brake fluid changed on my W204, its not just a matter of draining and filling up, i have a friend that works for a independent Euro car workshop, they hooked the master cylinder up to a pressure bleeder and pressurized the master cylinder to 2 bar while bleeding the brakes, 1 guy in the car 1 opening the bleed nipples all while the machine is feeding new fluid, this took about 30 minutes but when you add the second guy its an hours labour.

Cool. That sounds awesome! Least I know the money is going somewhere then. I don't mind paying for a proper job just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off. Just so used to my old 1995 Nissan Pulsar being so old school, cheap and simple to run haha.
