Replacing stock audio speakers?

There seems to be 2 schools of thought regarding improving base or stock audio (non-Burmester 5 speakers with 4 4" door speakers and 1 footwell sub)) in a GLC SUV. Some say just replacing the
door speakers with Focal, Match, etc. (components in front, coaxials in rear and leaving existing sub) will provide substantial improvement sonically. Others say installing a DSP/amp is necessary
to make any worthwhile and noticeable improvements when replacing the speakers. Any experience with either approach and what is best to improve the sonics of the base system?
