Computer Chip Shortage
#26
I also lost the Augmented Reality for Nav and my dealer said no car would be getting that option for maybe the next two or three years. Which may not be true, but he did not give me any hope that it would start working when the Comm Module gets installed.

I ordered a 2022 E-450 All Terrain back in early June. They called a few weeks later and asked if I would be willing to drop a few options in order to get the car faster. I just told them to let it ride as we are in no hurry. What information do I need from the dealer to do any tracking of my own?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Old chip tech = cheap = what the carmakers want
Chip shortage pain will be felt into 2023.

GM says pain into 2022. Given the changing nature of the situation it’s not a leap to say the pain will ooze into 2023.
It can be credibly argued that MBAG has been and will continue to be harder hit by the chip shortage, compared with the bigs including GM, VW and Ford.
DETROIT (Reuters) -General Motors Co (GM) offered a profit forecast for 2021 that disappointed analysts on Wednesday, as its third-quarter earnings were hit by a global semiconductor shortage and rising commodity prices, factors it expects to continue until late 2022.

Has anyone checked out the US MB website recently - mbusa.com - and noticed that certain options are missing in 2022 builds, e.g. hands-free, wireless charging, etc... those are gone for good? I thought the chip issue was getting resolved...

The chip issue has no clear resolution in the near term. Statements made by carmakers are hopes, not predictions.

Yeah, don't expect this to resolve anytime soon. The configurators and order guides are just starting to reflect reality. I'm not even sure car manufacturers want this to resolve quickly, because the shortage actually has been a boon for them. They are making more money now on the cars they sell, because they don't have to discount them, and they are redirecting the chips they can get to the S Class and other high margin products. Their profits are pretty healthy at the moment, despite the shortages and several executives have already said that they plan to limit supply even after the chip shortage has resolved. They don't really wanna get back into the discount business. It's more profitable for them to sell fewer cars at higher margins, than flooding the market and follow up with incentives and discounts to move the inventory.

It's conceivable in my view that carmakers will "slam" (remember 1980s phone service slamming?) unwanted options on consumers because in the present situation they can get away with it. This raises profits and sets expectations for a new normal. The offered excuse might be supply chain difficulties. Whether or not that is the truth may never be known.

Quick question. Would you be able to run apple carplay/android auto without the hermes module? A person on another forum has just gotten his S213 facelift 220d 2 days ago without hermes module and apple carplay is missing… he is not able to install anything himself without the missing module.
can mercedes or somebody else install/make it available?
the mercedes dealer he bought it from has no answers.

JakeW213,
I received a car in August without the Hermes module and can use Apple Carplay, however it is not wireless (I do not believe it is not wireless because of not having the module, but I may be incorrect).
Regards,
Justin

JakeW213,, what Justin said.
Got mine in late July and I concur with all that Justin said.
It does work when plugged in.
Buy the type C USB cords, so much nicer than using the bulky adapter.

Latest reports suggest the chip shortage will affect auto production into 2024.
Reason is steep increase in chip demand and chipmakers can’t keep up. The global health situation is a footnote not the main issue
More chip demand from consumer electronics (mobile phones).
More chip demand from cars due to higher chip per vehicle content across the board, especially for EVs.

2010 E550 4Matic sold, 2015 CLS 550 sold, 2016 CLS 550
Picked up my new CLS 53 this week. Said it had the premium package which included adaptive headlights. Get home, 4 hour drive from dealership, and realize that I had the regular LED lights. Email the sales rep right away and he said they were not included due to chip shortage. He then said that he would have told me if I had told him those lights were important to me!!!! As this is my third cls, I absolutely love that feature and it was non negotiable to have it omitted. The dealership did not inform me that the car did not have it. They did not ask me to sign anything saying it was missing. The Mercedes website states that it is part of the package. Does anyone know if they can be retrofitted? I have every other option including adaptive cruise and dash cam. What would you guys do? I am so pissed. I can’t believe the dealership duped me.

I assume it's a 2023 year?
I suggest you look at your "Build" sheet to see it was omitted. It's odd because when I signed off on mine due to the Hermes and some other chip shortage my adaptive headlights worked as intended although the SOS, map updates, adaptive navigation did not.
It's all been sorted out 100%.
Nice car!

It is a 2022. Built in June. They never showed me the build sheet. I have the dealer trying to figure it out if they can be ordered and retrofitted. They set up a case with their tech line. Apparently the dealer cost on the parts is over $6k but they are not even sure what parts they need. It’s become a nightmare. The dealer should have told me.
