Buy one that has already been restored. Proper restoration could go into six figures, depending upon level of detail and workmanship.

not quite what you might want, but a guy i know has a completely restored 1970 SL roadster. it is one of the most beautiful cars i have ever seen. he would sell it i think for under $30,000. it is deep navy blue w/pearl grey leather.

I'm presently restoring my '61 220SEb. I intend to do the majority of work my self with help from specialists on the parts I'm not brave enough to undertake. Although the fact I've owned the car since the '90s, I'm only the second owner and still keep in contact with it's first makes the car more 'personel' to me. So I'm more interested in seeing its transformation than if I'd just bought it.

For those interested here's the progress so far

well ive finally found a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3

it is in perfect mechanical condition, with only 55,000 ORIGINAL kms

only needs minor body work to be done on the outside, which is not a prob because i want to change the color anyways, and in the interior, everything is mint except for the drivers seat which has wear and tear on it from use, obviously.

the owner of the car is the 1st original owner, and is selling for $5,500CAD

now, is it worth the buy?

any advice would be gratefull
thanx

I agree with Chappy...but it doesn't sound like you are going to 'restore' it anyway but rather "fix it up". Don't see how you can loose at that price or mileage though. Sounds like a great daily driver.

Wow, be prepared for a shock both on prices and the amount of work needed.

First, the use of the word, "restore" is interesting.
I suggest, first go to the M100 Board. Post your intentions. There are several M100 guys from Toronto, Ca. Get one to look it over with you. This is one of the world's most complicated machines. There are pitfalls you wouldn't dream of. I inspected a 6.3 listed on EBAY this last winter. Said to be very nice, it was what I'd call a parts car. M100 guys are real helpful.
Aso consider what others were writing. I've bought 6.3s with the intention of total rebuilds, thus condition, excepting rust, wasn't a problem. My very best daily driver cost 21,000 USA $. Hope that hits hard. A bad 6.3 is a money rat hole, a good one, a joy every day.

Thanx a lot Dan, I've been reading all of your posts on the links provided above, and have gathered a lot of much appreciated information that I needed. I will be setting something up with the guys on the M100 boards to see if one of them to come along with me and check it out. It really isnt a restore job, it will be just a slight cosmetic fix up, well from the info i have on it from the seller so far. Hopefully there wont be many other issues to deal with.
