MB - Picking the right Diagnostics Help
I'm reaching out to seek guidance on the selection of a diagnostic tool for Mercedes trucks and cars, specifically focusing on models such as the Actros, Atego, and Arocs, mainly for models pre-2019. My background predominantly involves working with diagnostic tools from various other brands like Toyota's Techstream and VAG group's VCDS. However, I find myself in unfamiliar territory when it comes to Mercedes' diagnostic systems.
My primary goal is to make an informed decision regarding the purchase of a diagnostic tool that caters to both Mercedes trucks and cars. I am still learning the complexities of Mercedes' diagnostic software, particularly the differences between STAR, DAS, and Xentry, along with understanding their respective applications and necessary hardware.
As of my current understanding, STAR appears tailored for older trucks, while Xentry is linked with newer models. However, uncertainties persist regarding whether investing in Xentry would ensure compatibility with older truck models. I am seeking insights from individuals with a deeper understanding of Mercedes' diagnostics structure, particularly on whether Xentry is exclusive to trucks or if separate tools are designated for cars.
Furthermore, I would like to confirm that the chosen diagnostic tool should possess the capability to reprogram car/truck comfort modules and additional features. It is important that the tool works with a Windows 10 machine or at a bare minimum with a Windows 7 machine, as the laptop intended for use with the diagnostic tool will be purchased and configured separately, therefore I would appreciate input on what would be needed in terms of specs and how it should be configured. Additionally, I have come across mentions of C4/C5 DoIP "versions," yet the specifics and differences remain elusive to me as to what is what.
Moreover, I've encountered references to "Xentry Pass Thru," but lack clarity on how it differs from the standard Xentry. I admit to being very much in the dark as far in terms of the distinctions and nuances of Mercedes' diagnostics, and any insights into what each entails would be immensely helpful.
Thank you in advance for your valuable assistance.
Best regards,
Martin
