European pick up?

Hi all,
just found out that we can get a March/April build date for our 2005 E55 wagon and I have a questionfor you all. If we can get a European delivery do you recommend it? What are the plus's of doing this? My husband is concerned that if we do it we cannot properly use the Autobahn as the car will be in the break in period. Thoughts?

I have not done the European delivery on the MB, but from what I have read and heard from others who have, this is a very good option. As for the autobahn, you should not have a problem. You should keep your car below a certain RPM during the break in period, but you should have no problem reaching some very high speeds (100+) even with this limitation. With a March/April Build date, you should take delivery during a very enjoyable time of the year (weather wise).

I say go for it and report back here on your adventure!

There was a story recently in a magazine (I forgot which one, sorry) about this very topic. You should really look into this as in some cases the manufacturer goes way out of their way to accomodate you. I read they give big discounts on travel, hotel you name it. I wish I could remember the magazine, I'll see if I can find the article.

The Mercedes Magazine (free subscription at www.mbusa.com registered owners) ran the late article last year. The AMG models do not qualify for the European Delivery discount that the regular models do, so unless you're going to Europe anyway, there is no savings.

Well, we were told today that we cannot pick it up in Europe as according to our salesman they are not allowing Euro delivery on the E55 wagons. I was not looking at doing this because of any savings but because it was an experience I would love to have. Oh well, next car.

anyone know why they only allow Euro delivery on certain models?

I'd love to do it on a 2006 SL55 I plan to buy.

My guess is that the 7% discount under the plan is for their non-premium vehicles. I noticed that the discount doesn't apply to the SLK350, but it can be picked up as part of the Euro Delivery program.

Rather than doing a "pick up" perhaps attending AMG's driving experience at Nordschleife would be a better trip. Just the the rides in the DTM cars would be worth it.

Nope, SL is not in the program.

Technically the SL is not in the program, but there are some influential dealers that can arrange for exceptions. PM me if you would like the name of one.

Again, with the exception of models made in the US (the M-class), European deliver can in most circumstances be arranged.

They will sometimes not "officially" offer models that are tough for dealers to get in the US. They don't want to undercut their dealer network by creeating a car that isn't available from your locat dealer but is only available through European Delivery.

As I mentioned before, if you would like the name of a sales person who can likely arrange European Delivery on the E55, please PM me.

Plus, AMG issues aside, would they deliver an E55 wagon to the US? They're not sold or offered through MBUSA otherwise...

i don't know about the AMG issue, but if you want the scoop on the European Delivery experience, check out the W211 forum. Search for posts from me and from TPAbnz. I think mine is called "In Stuttgart for ED."

My wife and I found it to be a delightful, fun, and educational experience. If you want a pointer to a sales person who almost exclusively does Euro Delivery, PM me and I'll be happy to send you his info. I'm in Northern Virginia, near D.C.
