Just left dealer and reviewed 7 GLs/Observations!

Just had the opportunity to look at 7 GLs at the local dealership side by side and chat with the sales person one on one. No hype from him, my vehicle is already on order, plus we've been friends for years. And I buy all of my MBs from this guy.

1) Poorly equipped vehicles are not selling. People are opting to order. The early vehicles should have been heavy on the options.

2) Saw a Pewter with macademia leather, fully loaded and already sold!! Every option except distronic, keyless go, and off road package. Beautiful vehicle. If I had walked on the lot looking to possibly buy, I would have bought it on the spot.

3) 18" vs 19" wheels. Huge, huge difference. For one, the 19" is a better looking wheel. and number 2 the 19" fills the wheel well and makes the vehicle appear as though it sits lower to the ground. The skids plates, front and back are a nice added touch. Simply put, the $1100 for the off road appearance package is a must.

4) Premier Edition - It has the pretty chome fog lamps. They are oval and not round. They are an accessory that can be ordered, but you would have to replace the entire section including the fog lamps themselves, no simple chrome overlay that you snap on. Don't know the cost. Loved the chrome running boards. I must try to see about getting them for the OBlack that I have ordered. The nappa seats are priceless and the 20" wheel are nice too. Here's the negative. That oak, pine looking wood grain kills the entire vehicle for me. Even on the steering wheel. It looked ok in the pictures. But once you look at it in person, it looks cheap and out of place. I wish MB had done something different here.

Yeah I think they said it was matte birch or something, very wierd looking with the black we saw on the Premier Edition.

I got a chance to see a Premier edition today and I pretty much agree with everything, the wood is an aquired taste I guess. It should have been darker to keep it from looking like one of these dealer add on wood packages. That said I'd still get the Premier Edition it still has a sweet interior and amount of options.

Quite frankly...If I were buying a GL right now...I'd refuse to buy anything but the Premier Edition...IMO it is the best of everything...comes fully equipped with all the options you'd want and the black on black combo with that wood is something that appeals to me...the outside look is amazing with the 20 inch wheels and all the areas of chrome that are part of the pkg that make it more likeable...but too bad my 98 ML is working just fine so i wont be seeing one of these in my garage least not in the near future

I agree, I'd take the Premier edition too, no waiting on an ordered model to come in. Mercedes would do well to offer the Nappa leather as an option in other colors other than Black on "regular" GL450 models. The upcoming GL550 should have Nappa leather standard IMO.
