Airmatic Problems

I hate to say it but so far I am quite disappointed in the reliability of my GL Premier Edition. It has already been in the shop once (airmatic compressor went out at 1800 miles) and today the visit workshop light came on once again (3200 miles). Has anyone else had similar problems?

Airmatic suspension along with ABC (Active Body Control) are prone to failures. Hopefully, your GL gets fixed correctly and you wont need to go over and over. All I can say is been there, gone it, and won't go back.

I received a GL Premier Edition yesterday. Drives much different than the regular GL I test drove, for the worse! Feel kind of nauseaus on hills. Is it possible this is just the difference between 18" and 20" tires or is it maybe the Airmatic suspension?

GL450 Premier Edition
So far so good. 1700 miles on my PE and no major issues. I just have a problem with the radio controls on the steering wheel. If I use the buttons to cycle through my preset radio stations, the radio will seek to the next available radio station, not one of my presets. Anyone know a fix?

On another note, anyone have a good recommendation for a leather cleaner/conditioner? Do not use the Armor-all leather wipes. It leaves streaks in the leather.

Probably too "floaty" for you. Have you tried putting in Sport (if there is such a thing on the GL)?

I took delivery of my GL yesterday. Upon delivery my sales person took me through the setup using the buttons on the steering wheel. There is an option that you can change for scan vs. preset. I can not remember how she initially accessed the menu but it is there. Call your dealer

My GL had the same problem this weekend.
The front airride just went out without warning on the highway.

There are only 900 miles on this car, and I am now starting to worry about it.

It seems this car is going to be in the "workshop" more than my garage.

For those with airmatic suspension that is working, do you prefer the ride over standard susp. What about under highway cruising or sporty driving with bodyroll? For those with standard suspension, is it sporty enough and prevent body roll?

Not only do all GL's have Airmatic, but there is a known issue with the pump involved; MB can't help if there was a glitch in the supplier's delivered product. Aside from the hassle of a wait, they are replacing them ASAP; everyone ought to cool down and accept this issue as just that, ONE issue.

I don't think it's an official recall,

but I have read in a couple places, and had my service manager admit, that the pumps supplying the AL built-vehicles with Airmatic were a bad batch. I think they can tell by your VIN whether you are affected.

Depends where I'm going.
I haven't had any problems (knock on wood) but would be interested to know what the affected VIN #s are anyways.

My Airmatic problem is the other way around. Instead of loosing air or not pumping air, it pumps way too much air resulting in a ride comparable to a cement truck. It seems pump doesn't know when to stop pumping air. It doesn't happen all the time. I took it to the dealer but they said airmatic voltage readings are within range. I still dont get it how the air pumps are to be diagnosed by its voltage readings. Dealer still insists theres no problem despite the fact the they admitted my headliner is collapsing, which was, I explained to them, was due to constant pounding from the suspension.

The cover that pulls over the "2nd sunroof" tore away on mine and they had to replace the headliner.
Took better part of 3 days . I'm sure 1-2 days to get headliner delivered so make sure headliner is in stock unless you want to get in and out of a 230 for 3 days. A real pain , too low!!
The rub is the cover either was never corrected or tore away again in a day, so I'm lined up to do it again when my B service comes due.

I took delivery yesterday and I started noticing today that when the right pasenger side tire gets into a pot hole I can hear a noise coming from that side! I can only hear when it goes into something and for the rest it is all okay but I am a little worried. Have any of you experaince this same issue. IMO it has something to do with the suspention in the front right side.

Check out this site for Mercedes problems. There are a number of campaigns listed some of which refer to the airmatic. The few I looked at refer to W164 (i.e. new ML) but the ML and GL use a lot of the same parts as far as I understand.

I just bought a new GL450 and it only has 200 miles on it and I have sensing some problem with the front side passenger tire or airmatic eveytime the SUV goes into a pot hole I can hear a noise coming from the side and it also feels like there is somethins loose but I went to the dealer and they said this was normal because when the hieght was at normal and not raised the airmatic bottle could be without air and this happens but his solution was raise the vehichle and the airmatic bottle regains pressue and air your problem is over and thats just what I did and yes the problem went away until the vehicle again lowered to the normal position and it keep doing the same, so the problem is only when the SUV is in the lower position and only in the front right side bottle. Any recommendations. Thanks also everything else is super.
