Need help. Problems after HID install.

Hey guys, i got a 07 GL with no HID option. I love the look of HIDs, so i got a set of aftermarket installed right after i took deliver of it. It was installed yesterday by a local shop here in Vancouver, and tonight all the problems came instantly. Speedo stoped working, parking sensor stoped working, passenger airbag switched off, ABS and ESP both switched off, and check engine light. oh yea, no more power steering.

Can you guys give me some suggestions? will dealer fix the problems because of the aftermarket HIDs? Can it still be driven?
Thanks alot!

Wow,
Sounds like you have a major issue, not just HID's. I did the same thing, had HID installed about 3 weeks ago, no issues what so ever. There really insnt much to the install other then swapping out the lights, installing the ballisters and mounting. I am not sure what they could have done to mess everything else up. Have you asked the shop? You could take the car into the dealership and not tell them but if the issues are linked to the HID install they might charge you if they find out!!

Depends where I'm going.
Could be a grounding issue. Regardless, you are very much SOL if you can't get the problems resolved. It should be pretty obvious to the dealership that you had some aftermarket work done and they will definitely void your warranty for electrical issues.

Thanks for the replies guys. I made an appointment with my dealer on tuesday to let them check it out. If they won't fix it for me, i will have to go back and fight with the HID installer.
Oh btw, what does SOL stand for

You should fight with the installer first. If you go to the dealership, they WILL void your warranty for this issue and any future issues. The last thing you want is to lose your warranty because of this. Keep the dealer out of this until you know for sure that you will be paying out of pocket.

If the installer spliced into your wiring harness, MB may even require you to replace the entire wiring harness before they will reinstate your warranty (I have seen this happen before and it will cost you thousands to replace a wiring harness).

Thanks Robert! Those are some really good points. thank you!!!
This is my first MB, and i didn't know it would cause all those problems from a bad HID install.

Well guys, i went to the installer today and he couldn't figer it out. so he took the HIDs off and send me off to the dealership. Spend all my afternoon there and the dealer guys can't get it fixed either. i had to leave my car there today, hopefully i will hear some good news from them tomorrow. this is so f*cked up.

unfortunately for you, i still bet the problem was the aftermarket guy spiking some wires in the harness---he doesn't want to admit it (and he has no clue how to go about fixing it)---and the dealer doesn't know the wires in the harness have potentially been played with, so they're scratching their heads as well...
maybe it's time to mention the HID install to them, if for no other reason than to lead them down the correct path with the correct info?

Depends where I'm going.
Sorry to hear that they couldn't fix the car. It sure seems like the HID guys have no clue what's going on and are trying to pass the buck. I would start documenting everything in detail. Prepare yourself for the worst!

Consider your options:

1) Let the dealer discover it themselves but when they find out be ready to have a good answer rather than just scratching your head when they ask "Why the fuxk didn't you tell us?"

2) Let the dealer know already but be ready to have a good suggestion and not just scratch your head when they tell you "You just fuxked up your warranty."

3) See if you have any warranty (implied and all) that could cover all the work done by the HID installer. And if there is some sort of warranty then study, scrutinize, analyse, all its aspect and be ready to do the extreme.

4) Get a really good lawyer who could advice you early on as you consider all your options. A REALLY good one.

5) Think about getting wife a rolex so she will forget about the GL for a while.

6) Skip lunch to save money - you're gonna need it.

Thanks for the replies guys!
It took dealer a few days to fix it, but they fixed it after all. I took a look at the print out paper dealer gave me, there were 32 error codes.
i guess i am not going to mess with it again.

It cost him nothing. MB doesn't play games.

Did they say what it was? I am wondering if there was a short or if they just reset everything?? That is quite common when you play with the electronics. A simple ECU reset can get things back up and running (if you are lucky).

Mel - It was covered, so it didn't cost me anything. otherwise it would be a 3k+ bill

Jangy- there was a part that controls ESP broke, so they had to order a new one in. there were bunch of error codes too.

Did the HID's cause it, or was it just coincidence? Do you know if the HID kit involved splicing into the factory wiring, or was it a plug and play deal?

I am not sure wether HIDs caused it or not. The hids were plug and play, no splicing the wires.
