The GL was a SsangYong Rexton since 2000 (maybe even earlier).

I know from personal experience...I still own a 2004 version of it (in Korea...doesn't get driven much obviously)

The original Rexton, (same body type) was built with pretty much all MB parts (including the engine). I wish I were in Korea to show you all the resemblances.

SsangYong is where Mercedes dumps all the crap that the have left over from models that ceased to be built a decade ago. How long has it been since Merc stopped building inline 6's and went to Vee's, well your Koren car runs on that old 6. But it's OK nothing that is in a SsangYong is in the Mercedes Showroom, so we didn't buy a SsangYong, you brought a Korean car with parts from the Merc scrap bin

Actually....like my previous post said...."the original" Rexton had the Mercedes Engine. Mine doesn't. Other than that....I'm not saying the Rexton is on the level with the GL. MB definitely spiced things up a little, but it's the same car with a better engine. Kind of like how the eclipse and the (talon?) was.

P.S. That link I believe is a picture of the 3rd generation. My 2nd generation looks even more like the GL.....

I understood that the GL was desighned all new in the U.S. for the U.S. to compete with Cad Escapades and Ford Explosions ? I don't buy it. post more info. Why would MB use old stuff to compete with GM latest cutting edge? That thingy you posted can't be...

Ssangyong was not able to export the Rexton until last year when it stopped using some major parts from mercedes. (License agreement) My guess is that they saw how well the car was doing and decided to launch their own version of it.


Granted they changed the body a bit, but basically the same car. Compare for yourself.

Don't get me wrong....with the Navi, I paid close to $40k for the car. I guess $15k for the star isn't too bad!

The headlights look more like those on the new Hyundai/Kia minivans.


If you want to go a little bit further, the Rexton headlights look even more like the Infiniti G35. So does that mean the G35 and the Rexton are the same car?

Its the same car isn't it. Just the engine, suspension, interior, electronics and exterior are different.

I still don't see it.The ssang thingy is narrower and shorter..sure the headlights are similar in shape, but hardly interchangeable. and look at the rain gutters..and the windshields certainly would'nt be interchangeable either. Whenever vehicles share the same platform, it is easily detected by the doors and the rooflines. example; pontiac grand prix/buick century/regal/monte carlo....cadillac catera/opel omega/new gto/holden. Look at the door frames.."a" pillars. I don't think it's proven, nor can it be. ssang thing looks more like a mitsubishi or a rodeo.

That roof is alot closer..in fact, I'd say you nailed it if it wasn't for the slider door vs. conventional door on the ssangy thangy.

This is such a load of BS. I've seen the SSangYong vehicles in the UK and in Korea. They are smaller in every dimension. It's proven the GL is based on an enlarged ML platform. The SSangYong has been around longer than the original ML.
You're really looking foolish here, TresX.

Here we go again, what next? That the GL is nothing but a Jeep underneath? Why do people think that because a product may or may not look similar that they are the same. This is idiotic nonsense at its best. If the GL is the same as this Korean POS then that means the R and ML is too since they're all BUILT ON THE SAME PLATFORM! ANYWAY, the rexton was introduced in 2001 as a mid size suv and did not use a mercedes engine and has absolutely nothing to do with or related in anyway to the GL.

Relationship? All I read was that it had some definite influences in the profile from the M-Class.
