airmatic, suspension, blue smoke?...shall i even consider buying the gl?..these things are putting me off!...really like the gl...but scared of the investment..and then after warranty expires..what then...?...

what happened to "dr.z's" commitment to match lexus quality by 2007?...seems he still has alot to fix?..

Thanks for the informative post, Mr. Negative. It seems you have little to add to this forum other than complaints. Please leave.

Unhappy hey,hey..c'mon now...

i'm not trying to be negative...just saying what i read from other posters....it is all true, is it not?....

i like mb just as the rest of you, but lets be realistic here, you wont' find these initial problems on the "other guys", and you know whom i'm talking about...

aren't you guys a wee bit concerned?...well, if not, it's your money not mine..

i'm just trying to figure out why its happening to such a prestigious car maker?

well, if you want me to leave, i shall....

other guys?

oh really? I think your wrong there. Plenty of the "other guys" have problems as well.

Mercedes does NOT have the same quality that they had 10 years ago but it is supposedly improving. IMHO its about the same as BMW now. Nothing is going to be close to Lexus so if thats what your looking for 99.9 percent reliability ... go buy a lexus.

Hey you should own a BMW and then come here and give us your opinion. I owned various BMW's and they by far are the worst cars out there compared to MB and Lexus. MB is doing a great job especially introducing their first full size SUV, which in Car and Driver it slammed all the other SUV's. I personnnaly have a problem with my front airmatic but it is something which could be resolved.

Gollum,

Don't go away. You just have to learn how these boards work. I've been on boards for years - everything from diesels to motorcycles to firearms.

Most folks on boards with the exception of a few OCD types (that's a joke guys ) visit these boards for a few reasons:

1. Excited people who just bought the same vehicle and want to learn everything they can about it, including mods, accessories, etc.

2. People who want to find solutions to problems.

3. People who bond with others with similar interests and like to socialize.

Every vehicle model has problems - absolutely every one. You see posts about problems because people want to find solutions. I bet for every person with a problem, there are hundreds who aren't posting because they are out enjoying their ride.

If I believed everything I read in forums about Powerstroke diesels I would have never bought one - yet mine is still going strong at 165,000 miles and I've only replaced a water pump and an alternator in that time.

To prove my point, grab a six pack and go visit

http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/

You will find hundreds of posts from Lexus owners with plenty of problems.

Red face hey, thanks bax...

i understand...its just that when i hear that mb is trying to improve quality..and then hear issues within days/weeks of purchase it puts me off..i mean i'm going to spend >70k on a car , i would expect more quality...

but i understand what you're saying...yes, no car is perfect....

just convince me to buy my gl ![gl320 cdi probably.]..and i'll be extremely happy...

I don't need to convince you to buy a GL or any car for that matter, it's pretty easy - Like it, buy it. If you want to talk about reliability then forget about cars or computers or mobile phones or Ipods.... Toyota FYI sold a landcruiser out here about 6 years ago that they were raving about - 4.2lt Diesel 24v OHC etc anyway it was so bad that they stopped selling that engine and changed complete engines for customers with problems. That engine didn't return for 4 years and you can imagine what the resale value of the poor customers that purchased those Land Cruisers. To my knowlegde Merc has never had to withdraw an engine from production, nor has it had to replace complete engines on large scale due to reliability issues. In response to your original comment, airmatic has been a issue for a small batch of compressors that were sourced by merc and is not a design issue (as yet). Blue smoke is an observation and not an indication of engine failure, my cousin has gone through the blue smoke issue on his ML and was only during a brief period before his first service, the engine has been fine every since and he has done over 50K since. Merc told him it was part of the break-in cycle, I can't comment of that.

things with and without wheels
You also need to take under consideration who is making these posts, do they really own a Benz or is he some cheap shot salesman trying to get people not to buy a certain product.
I second the thought of if you like it buy it.

Gollam: I am at 4200 miles now with my GL and have not had one single problem. No, not one. I also have a '06 CLS55 AMG, @ 8600 miles. Have not had one problem with it either. Not bragging or saying that I won't have problems in the future. But so far so good. Yes, within the last couple of years, the quality has gotten better and it is continuing to improve. I would invite you to join the family!

airmatic problem.

Have 4k on the my GL 450 Premier edition. Have had to bring it in for airmatic suspension failure. It seems I am not the only one. My real issue is that the dealer can't give me an ETA when I will get it back. Have others experienced this long wait for repair?

Like Bax said all cars have some type of problems from time to time, I was just trying to say with my experaince owning a 745Li BMW which has numerouse electronic issues and my sunroof also pop and damages all my paint because the glass got stuck in it. I just wanted to compare my ownership experiance with my other cars which are MB and Lexus which to me have a much higher quality. My lexus LX 470 is 99' and has 125,000 no problems since I have bought it new.

All cars have their problems.
Don't take the word of a poster on the internet, think of statistics. Think of the sample size you are judging against and if we represent the entire population well. We don't.

I've had many problems with dads SL500, problems with my old X5, nothing with the LS430, and only one thing with the LX470. My old LS400 gave me hell in the after years. Cousins LX470 is a lemon, etc.
