I think their decision was purposeful to give the GL an edge as far as pushing it upmarket...they'll probably continue to produce the ML/R500 as long as their originally projected engine production runs, then switch over, a' la ML 320/350 both being 2004 models (midyear switch not out of the question).

I asked about the GL550 and GL420CDI and this was the repsonse:

"Thank you for your recent internet inquiry.

We anticipate the release of a GL320 CDI at some point in the first quarter of 2007 as a 2008 Model Year vehicle. At this time, we do not have any information regarding the release of a GL550 and the V8 Diesel engine will not be available for the US Market. We would encourage you to periodically check our website. This would be the best source for news on all our models, and can be accessed at www.mbusa.com

If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to e-mail us again or call us at 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (1-800-367-6372).

Sincerely,

Mark S.
Customer Relations
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC"

My interpretation is maybe on the 550 and never on the 420CDI too bad for us.

GL63 won't happen anytime soon, the last I checked with my sources. But that was about two months ago.

Easily the engine best suited to the GL. Europe gets it and it is some powerplant. 302bhp/516lb ft from memory. And over 20mpg.

Looks like the GL550 might be in the works for the USA. Already listed on EPCnet.

Although BMW made a great move making the 4.8 Litre the standard V8 motor, the GL is not the direct competitor the the X5; the ML is. And unless BMW drops the M V10 into the X5, the ML63 will still control that segment.

I agree with the other members saying that it was done for economy reasons. A GL/ML420 CDI would be awesome, BTW.

When I was getting my GL450 over the weekend, I happened to read the dealer's MB magazine regarding the GL and I saw GL550 (2007) in the magazine I don't know when in 2007 but we will see it in 2007. The only thing I am not too sure is will GL550 replace GL450 or not?

I am pretty sure that we will see both models here in the USA in the lineup.

This makes sense, otherwise, why would MB spend all the time and money to develop the GL450's engine based on the current S550 just to use it for one year? This leads me to another question, what's going to be the price increase? $5000? $10,000?

Yeah the price is what I'm waiting to see too. They should just make it a 2-3 option vehicle, i.e. pretty much loaded for about 75-80K. They should take the Premier Editions wheels, Nappa leather and other features and make them standard for the GL550. The GL320 CDI will be priced in between the two, but much closer to the 450 than the 550.

I suspect we'll see a GL550 at Detriot in Jan.

No Merc V6 is pricier than a V8 version.
