Question HELP: Headrest RES DVD formats compatibility

I have a new 2007 R-320 which has the MB factory RES DVD monitors behind the front headrests. So far it will only play DVD format movies but none of my DVD-R disks format!

The Command Owner's Manual (page 88 and 89) stated that the player should be able to play all formats: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW. The manual stated that the factory setting is on Regional 1 for US, but can be reset for other Regions by MB service centers. I called my MB service advisor and he is waiting for answers from MB tech specialist.

Anyone has the headrest RES and is able to play DVD-R or DVD+R formats?

Thanks for any good suggestions.

I tried a DVD+R format disc and it wasn't working!!! The monitor still shows a message "invalid disc format, disc error". Is your RES system the MB factory? or Aftermarket? What model / year is your car?

Thanks.

Depends on how you are burning your disc. I have a factory installed, dual screen RSE. My car is a 2007 GL. How are you burning the discs? Are you setting the region correctly? Darn thing won't play a region free disc. It will play a disc that is marked for all regions or for region 1.

Ok this must be the reason why. I'll try burning new discs with either "all regions" or "region 1". I think the discs I have are all "region free".

Thank you so much.

No Cigar Yet !!! The discs are burned for all regions and still not played on my car's RSE monitors. Some research on the internet indicates that I may need to unlock the region codes on the DVD player. Most regions code unlock are for home DVD players and I dont know if this will solve the MB RSE player or not?

OKNish and anyone else may have any advice?

What are you using for burning? And have you tried a DVD burned for region 1? And I also looked in unlocking the COMAND but doesn't look like US models are that easy to unlock. Plus you could void the warranty also.

I dont really know the specifics of software burners since most recordings were done by my nephews. I'll look/ask/learn about these, this weekend, and hopefully something positive will turn up. What do you use/recommend on burner(s) that can make Region 1 DVD discs? Software name(s) or links will be Great.

You said you've looked into unlocking the COMAND? Why? The factory RSE player is located below the second row center console (RCLass) and below the 2nd row rear seat (GL and ML). So regions code unlock should be done directly to the RSE player (not the COMAND / head unit)? Am I right?

The COMAND User's Manual, on page 89, stated that: "The factory setting of the RSE CD/DVD player is regional code 1". It also stated "The setting can be changed at an authorized MB Center." So if all continue to fail, I plan to bring the car to MB service center and ask that the RSE player be unlocked. Otherwise this pricey ($3,000) RSE option is useless to our family! The kids have tons of DVD discs that play everywhere (from high-end home systems to cheap portable units), but none of them can be played on the R320.

Burners don't matter much. Software does. I use DVD Shrink (google it) and Nero.

I don't think you can unlock the DVD player. From what I researched, it appears that the region setting is applied via COMAND's engineering menu. That is why I looked at unlocking COMAND. It was more hassle then worth it so I quit that effort.

I am in a similar situation where my family likes to watch Bollywood movies and those DVDs are generally region free. So I just burn a copy for the ride. Do let us know what your dealer says about changing the region code. That will be the best way to go.

All else fails, buy a cheap portable DVD player, power it up from the cigaratte lighter and plug it in one of the aux ports on DVD drive. Those darn things will play anything. Run the wires under the mats and it's reasonably clean looking.

Exclamation about TO GIVE UP

[QUOTE=oknish;2065742]Burners don't matter much. Software does. I use DVD Shrink (google it) and Nero.

I downloaded the DVD Shrink 3.2 (freeware), bought and installed Nero 7.
I tried burning a backup discs for (1) Region 1, and (2) All Regions . . . none worked !!!
I used all default settings from Shrink and Nero. I also used max speed.
Are these settings OK? Any tips?
What am I missing here?
Thanks for all your help.

Make sure to select Nero as the burning program in DVD Shrink. Don't backup using DVD Shrink and then burn with Nero. Instead use DVD Shrink as one stop shop. Try burning at loweer speeds such as 1x. Also try different DVD media brands. I use Staples brand DVD+R and it works well.
