Ready to Sell

6K miles. Need a Yukon or Tahoe that I won't feel guilty about running up the miles and letting the kids be kids. Also, don't like the attention. What's it worth. Doesn't have heating pkg, distronic, and off-road. Stickered for 70,545.

Sorry to hear that.

"...I won't feel guilty about running up the miles and letting the kids be kids. Also, don't like the attention." What make you feel guilty about running up the miles or not liking the attention? You paid for the car and should not be concerned about what someone else thinks...it is your's to enjoy. As far as kids being kids...that's life...:-)

Sounds like you have a great GL minus only a couple of options most GL owners don't have like Distronic and Off-road package. Mercedes has always been a car that requires options on top of the base and you can't get away from it. But there are other intangibles such as the safety features and the great ride. Hope you rethink your plans to sell it because in the long run the GL will bring you more pleasure in future years.

Sorry to hear you're selling. I haul 2 - 3 Labrador Retrievers in mine, which I'm not so sure is any better or worse than having kids in the car! Before you do sell, go test drive a Yukon or whatever. I think you'll really miss your GL.

If you are determined to sell, Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com) or Edmunds (Edmunds.com) can give you a pretty fair representation of what you'll get for the car for trade or sale to another party.

Jack hate to hear this. Make sure you find something you like before unloading the GL so you can really compare the two and be happy.

Was part of your decision based on the towing situation?

Ever heard about Cognitive Dissonance? I learned about it while taking marketing classes in college many years ago. Everyone gets it.

Keep us posted.

You gotta do what you gotta do, Jack450. I do hope that after closer look at other cars you may decide that GL is better value. But it's your call in the end.

If it's getting you too much attention, you can always move to SoCal

Jack, think about why you got the GL - those reasons must be as valid now as they were when you made the buying decision. Maybe you are paying too much attention to the attention you are getting. You will probably get the same attention in an '08 Yukon as well.

I guess this all stems from a party we attended over the weekend. Just surrounded by a bunch of "Fake People". It's like these people treat me differently than in the past because of the symbols of wealth I now have. I bought the vehicle for the features and safety. Maybe I'll just chill and think about it. Can I be a simple man and own a new Mercedes? I'm a small business owner who works my butt off. Heck, look at the time this is posted.

Enjoy those things you like and "work your butt off for." You won't change from the person you are just because you drive a MB GL.

Drive on Jack...:-)

I'm a small business owner (partner actually), in my late 30's, living in the South as you so I can relate somewhat. I purchased my Benz's for the same reason you mentioned. Most of my friends and business associates know my history with vehicles so none were surprised when I started driving Mercedes.

Remember, a fully loaded Yukon Denali is a few thousand less than a base GL but people don't see it that way. All they see is the MB star and think mega bucks. It would be the same if you were to drive a C240.

Jack450, I would seriously reconsider your decision to go from the GL to a Yukon/Tahoe. I recently had the misfortune of being involved in an accident in which our GL was hit from behind, causing significant danage to the left rear panel and bumper. Neither of my parents was injured and the vehicle is now being repaired. As a "comparable rental vehicle," I was given a 2007 Tahoe with 1600 miles on the clock to drive while the GL was at the body shop. I lasted a week. It had creaks and rattles everywhere. It felt like a lumbering beast on the road and was not the easiest to drive. All the time I drove it, I found myself wondering if it would roll over in an accident, as it felt somewhat top-heavy. I was surprised because I had driven a Yukon Denali at an Auto Show in Motion a few years back and it didn't feel this scary. If you're worried about the impression you give when you pull up somewhere, remember that you're no thief and that you've worked hard for your success. You bought that car for the reasons you stated and I feel if you give it up because of "what people think," you're doing yourself a disservice. As far as the kids are concerned, children can be gently taught to respect cleanliness and to take care of things, including vehicles. You wouldn't allow your child to throw his/her french-fries on the diningroom floor, right? The same is true about the car. I'm a pediatrician, and I know child behavior very well. Set limits with the kids and teach them firmly, but kindly that certain things are not acceptable. It will take some time, and depending on the ages of your kids, you will see results quickly. Praise them when they put their trash in the proper place and use common sense. If you don't want them to draw on the seats, don't give them a pen. Think about your decision. If you decide to keep the GL, go out and get some Lexol or Leatherique for the moments when the kids forget to be neat, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Jack, you've gotten some great advice here on why to keep the GL. Yes, an ordinary person can drive a Mercedes! I never in all my life thought I'd own a MB...heck, I'd never even ridden in one until I went on a test drive for the GL. I saw the GL on the freeway and thought what a beautiful car it was & I just had to know what it was. I came home & priced it. I assumed, because it was a Mercedes, that it would be a million space bucks, so I was surprised when I discovered it wasn't much more than a fully loaded American SUV.

I'm the Human Resources Director for a manufacturing company and my husband is in law enforcement; we're your regular average Joe's (and Joanna's haa haa). We loved the look of the vehicle and bought it.

Don't let what other people do or say influence you. By doing that, you're giving away your power. If these people treat you differently, then they weren't your true friends in the first place.

Jack...keep the GL, don't let others indirectly force you to change cars...you're a smart guy and you'll know who your true friends are even with the GL450 in hand...a car is just a car it says little about the person that owns it, it doesn't make who/what the person is.

enough of my "shpeal"...ENJOY it, if not now, then when ?

Hi

My first benz as well. I went up window shopping from a Honda pilot to subaru tribeca to an MDX and finally to GL. Just like someone mentioned above, I am taking my time to teach the kids to stay mannered inside the car and they are slowley learning it. People around me is another story. A few of them will envey (my beloved Asian Indian community ) and a few will discourage.

i just bought it because I realized that i had to buy a benz once in my life. Hope a few good words from fellow forum members change your mind.

I have to really convince myself hard to even considering getting a denali. Not that its a bad car.. its just not a Benz.. It may be something like comparing a ferrari to a corvette..

I think you're all pretty much right. I should not apologize for success, it certainly wasn't handed to me. Like some on this forum, I've wanted a Mercedes since I was ten years old. I'm keeping it, putting 200k miles on it, and getting another!

Jack450 - you made the choice that you have to live with and so more power to you. Jen echoed my sentiments that if folks are treating you differently now then it's really those people that need an adjustment not you. You work your butt off so you should enjoy the fruits also.

GLDriver - I am also another desi and share the same thoughts. It is funny, ain't it.

Maybe we should all head over down South and give Jack450 a group hug?

That aside though it's nice to see the human touch here as well.

You are sooo right as well . A big applause to Jack450

For those who are not DESI its a term used for Asian Indians and it means " originated from same country". Lol

Another Desi here. Gujarati in fact.

GLDriver and oknish, what parts of India are you guys from? Man the amount of Desis here is amazing, its growing finally.

Anyways, glad the OP is keeping the GL450. I remember when I first bought my E320 (in my 20's) everyone in my Indian community talked ****, but I could give a rats *** about them. Same thing happened when I bought my E55, or my wife the 750li. People will always be jealous of your hard work and money. Don't let it get to you, since in the end you are the better person.

The TL has since been replaced by a Volvo S80 V8 AWD. Lets put it this way, the TL was far from reliable IMO. Transmission recall, had to replace the spark plugs at 25K miles, navigation problems. It was a great car when it worked though. The Odyssey was going to be replaced by a R class, however I am now waiting for the GL550 to come out. Wife turned down the idea of an R63, citing "no need for it."

Surprisingly my E63, CLS55 and 750li have been reliable. Nothing but regular service for them. The CLS is a weekend car so it doesnt get used much. The E63 and S80 are my normal daily drivers for when I am not flying to Houston, Seattle, or San Francisco.
