Gl550
So, all-n-all, as you can see, I have absolutely nothing new to report. He thought package information would be forthcoming very soon, so I'll call again in a week or two if he hasn't called me first.
Hangin' in There...
2008 GL320 CDI will not be able to order Multi-Contour seats or Off-Road package, but will be able to order Distronic.
2008 GL450 will not be able to order Multi-Contour seats, but will be able to order Off-Road package and Distronic.
2008 GL550 will have Multi-Contour front seats standard, but will not have Off-Road package or Distronic.

Zu klären i.e. To Clarify:
Are you saying for the 550 that the off-road package or distronic will...
(A) Not be a part of the standard equipment list and not available to order as an option?
or
(B) Not be a part of the standard equipment list, but available to order as an option?
Where is that DaVinci code guy anyway?
Last, but not least, what is your source of info GL Driver? I know I've asked 4 times already, but I just had to ask one more time.

For 2008, the GL550 does not come equipped with the Off-Road package and it CANNOT be ordered.
For 2008, the GL550 does not come equipped with Distronic and it CANNOT be ordered.
For 2008, the GL550 DOES come equipped with Multi-Contour front seats; Standard.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
However, knowing the history of MBUSA and their odd-ball decisions on what the US buyer should be driving, the illogical responses of GL Driver are consistent with those of the bean counters in Montvale.

MBUSA probably feels the 550 is there " bling model " . Note the Escalade sized grill and 21 " wheels . They figure no one will take it off road into the mud , so didn't bother to spend the engineering resources on recalibrating the " Off Road " pkg's suspension componentry. The front fascia is different on the 550 , and perhaps they didn't bother with re-engineering the Distronic to fit it , esp with rumors that the newer S-class version might soon be put into the GL line.So perhaps the GL 550 will get Distronic when the new version arrives .
Maybe I'm the one whacked out consumer that doesn't care about the bling, but I do care about having the "off road" package. Why put a bigger engine in the darn thing if all you're going to do is putz around town? I want to take the beast and its larger engine wherever I want, pulling whatever I want, carrying everything I want, whenever I want to go and as fast as possible, thank you very much.
If all of this is true, I'm going to be very disappointed since I could have been driving a 450 for 2 months now. Sure would have loved to have had it on our trip to Jackson Hole last week, as well as the upcoming 4th of July trip to Telluride. I know the dog would just love that 3rd row air conditioner keeping him cool too.

I agree that not to have the ORP available on the 550 but an option on the 450 is just plain nuts. That means on the 550 you cannot get the ADSII system on the top of the line vehicle but can get it on the 450? Will they offer ADSII as a stand-alone option or standard on the 550?

I am the opposite. I am in it for the bling and top of the line towing/family rig. I don't need the ORP at all.

Exactly......you are on the same logic path I am ( see post #72) and it just doesn't make sense )

I certainly hope MB don't make a huge error as regards options on the GL550. Coming from a G-wagen and before that a Range Rover great off road capability is vital in any SUV I purchase. Even for those who don't often go off roading, knowing you *can* is important.
I hope this issue gets resolved soon guys and in a few years when kids are on the way I may well be joining you in GL land. It certainly is the best 7-seater on the market bar none.
