MB rep left a message on my home answering machine. Said he would call back on Tues. No number to return the call. I guess they don't want to be bothered except on their time. Jerk.

Thought this might make it easier to see the difference...thanks for the images Jack. Tight quarters and hopefully for all 320 users a good fix.

Hmm... This looks similar to the twin turbo RX-7 I had back in '93. Mazda was never able to come up with a solution with the hose coming off. I don't know what the hose was for but wheneve it came lose, I would lose power. Only if I knew what I know now... Good luck with your buyback demand, it is a major safety issue in my opinion.

I haven't seen any posts about this problem for the ML320 CDI. Is there something different about the GL installation of this engine that causes the problem? I'm planning on ordering an 08 ML320 but would have second thoughts if this is a common problem.

You are *** kidding me!!! A worm drive hose clamp? How about a threaded collar and nipple arrangement with Lock-Tite sealant? Big opportunity for the aftermarket.

Nope. Not a word. I listen to the message again and he said he would call back on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning I called MB and they said the notes in the computer say the same thing. The phone rep was a little confused too as to why he hadn't called back. I verified all my contacts too. They are correct. Afterwards, I called the phone number from the call ID and it happened to a direct line to his voicemail. I left a message.

As of this morning, still no call.

Sounds good. Firm but professional. No emotion, just the facts. You described the problem and said what you want them to do about it. And you copied the big guy in new Jersey. I would not change a word.

Edit: Just thought of one more thing. After you fax it, be sure to send another copy via certified mail with return receipt. It's a pain, but that's how you prove they received the letter.

Looks great, AS. Should be a model for future. Just one question - shouldn't you list who at the dealership will get this letter instead of just the dealer name?

I'll have the name on the fax cover sheet. It will be the General Manager. He's expecting it too.

This hose thing is getting scary. I am over 4000 miles with no trouble. March 21 build date. How can I tell what kind of hose I've got? I mean, how do I now if it's Q1 or Q2 or what? Going on a lot of road trips this summer and I will address this with the dealer at the free 5000 mile service.

Look at this thread for photos and what the stamp looks like. I used a camera in macro mode to take a photo since the writing was on the side and I couldn't see it. Worked great.

I'd be interested to know which yours has too.

With a January 18 build date, we talked to 3 dealers and not one of them said they have heard of a problem with the GL 320 CDI. Printed off this thread and others for them to read and not one of them say they have seen any problems. HMMMMM!?!? So if there is a problem it must not be something MB believes is not wide spread.

So I do not know what to think with 4500 miles we are still running strong.

The service manager at the dealer where I bought my GL stated to me that he had a bulletin regarding the hoses, though there's not a formal recall (yet). I believe there is a bulletin number available as well somewhere here? Suffice to say, if they have a service department then someone there knows there is a problem.

Mine went out at 7500 miles. Build date was 1/07, and took delivery first part of March. Was repaired last week with Q2 hose. 900 miles on it without problem. Willing to put up with one more failure, as this is the best vehicle I have ever worked out of.

Just an update....

Still not a word from MB since they received my letter on Friday 6/1 at 1032am.

My initial phone message from the regional rep promised a return call on Tues 5/29 but that still hasn't happened either.

I called today to the CS center. They hadn't a clue.

I encourage everyone who has had this issue to please file a complaint with NHTSA. It only takes about 5 minutes.

I had to file this under GL450 since the 320CDI is not listed. I'll call to see if I can get this corrected.

NHTSA Complaint
