Good things about the GL.......

After 2100 miles I don't have any issues with my 450......even the fuzzy rear wheel well liners that I thought would be an issue when I took the vehicle on a very muddy dirt road in New England.....are not an issue! They clean up very nicely! The vehicle performs as advertised and I have yet to find any quality problems Thought I'd start a thread where the "good things" are the issue! Good things and pleasant surprises.........have any?

Smile Safety as a priority...

Yes the car has many amenities that you can see, but what I truly appreciate about it are the safety related features that deploy to enhance driver awareness and safety...

examples:
1) I was towing my boat this past weekend (see trailer towing thread below), which pulled w/o issue. Additionally, when one of the trailer bulbs went "south", the MB engineers put in a current sensor which activated and gave me an appropriate warning message.
2) The back-up camera works extremely well with hitching up as well...don't need a spotter anymore. It's also nice to have when simply backing into a tight spot (read :avoid the kid's bikes, toys, etc)
3) Lastly, the reliability and "straight from the factory" quality has been really good. I currently have close to 5000 miles on my gas GL450 and have not a single issue to complain about (knock on wood)!!! This last point has me really happy with the purchase. The MB brand has struggled a bit with earlier models, but it appears that they are turning the corner.

This should be a good thread, I'm interested as well to know about other's experiences...

I've got 3,300 miles on my GL and so far (knock on wood) no problems. Very comfortable ride. I've had my 2 Labs in the back as well as several other dogs (I volunteer with a Labrador rescue group) and I love having the screen that attaches to the ceiling.

2700 trouble free miles for me and as I mentioned in a previous thread, the active headlights are just great and really help on those dark back roads. Also, as more of a qualitative feeling, the vehicle is just "solid". I have had many SUV's in the last 15 years but the GL just feels glued down and secure, by far the nicest. I prefer it to my wifes Range Rover which just feels floaty and less attached to the road. 70k is a lot of money for an SUV but I feel at least the quality of materials, build and beautiful styling make it well worth it. Performance is there if you need it and mileage isn't a joke like some of the monsters on the road. I just really enjoy it so far.

Agree on the mileage ...... that was a "surprise" for me.......19.5 on a recent 1000 mile round trip! Not bad considering I never got better than 18 in my Grand Cherokee which had a lot less space and comfort!

I envy you your 420! I've been driving the 320 around for a while, and I'm still so impressed with it despite the intercooler hose problems and the 1970's BlueTooth technology! It's attractive, large enough without being monsterous (unlike my Excursion, or as I call it my Fordasaurus), gets really good mileage for its size, and feels very well built. (Unlike myself.

Dont think that way. It is the same car with litle more power. Same everything. Even the cup holders are now the same. Before the European ones were more nicer with a hood cover. Same good GL.

Too much to like but here are a few -

A/C kicks butt (in SoCal, you need it).

Good solid feel when driving and amazing responsiveness.

Power when you need it.

Understated luxury (my favorite).

Active Xenon lights are awesome.

Distronic (and Distance warning) kick some screaming butt. Especially on SoCal freeways where %^&*# drivers galore.

All the above, PLUS the fact that at 1,500 miles I have nothing on the "punch list" - the vehicle is flat perfect, everything from fit and finish to systems work as designed. This is the best car/truck I have ever owned and the only one that I feel I REALLY got what I paid (dearly) for. Everyone from age 15 to 78 that has ridden in it loves it and raves about the ride quality and quiet cabin...

I know there were some early on problems.....BUT, the transmission is amazing......so smooth, and it really does analyze the current driving situation and try to adjust the shift points to that situation. Driving on a one lane dirt road with blind hills and curves where the max safe speed is about 15, the trans figured out I don't want to do more than 15 or so and it never moved out of 2nd and downshifted to 1st on the downhills all because it was monitoring what I was doing with the throttle and brakes...........I've had other SUV's that have supposed to been able to the same.........but none of them come close to this

Our GL450 after 6 months and 5,000 miles has been absolutely trouble free - the exact opposite of the 2006 ML500 it replaced. This was a real leap of faith on our part, but it has worked out.
I still can't understand how that car was so bad and this one is so good.

I forgot to add Parktronic to my list. Thanks, str8line. Even though it's a bit sensitive, it still is a GREAT help. I parallel park like a champ now and folks think I am so "good"

All of the above and the TVs have finally been used and were a pleasure. The sound system is intense when I was watching 300 on DVD (yes, a bootleg copy)

All in all, great feel, awesome ride, more or less, a wolf in sheep's clothing

Well, it is low at less than 13 mpg but it is understandable because I have being using it mostly for local in San Francisco - uphills, stop signs, traffic...
