Steering Wheel & Door Sills

On the way home from Telluride, we startled whittling the option list down on the 550 to those that are important to us... which leaves us with those that we either don't want, or don't know enough about. Here's Two:

1) Heated Steering Wheel
Does anyone own this and have any comments to share? We obviously live in a cold climate, but right now we don't appreciate the need for the heated steering wheel. Maybe it's because we've never had a heated steering wheel before. I remember when we got heated seats in our A6 how much we enjoyed them immediately, even though we certainly didn't appreciate their utility prior to having them.

2) Illuminated Door Sills.
Does anyone own this and have any comments or pics to share? I don't understand their functional utility other than the "cool" factor.

You'll get a kick out of this
When I brought this option up to my wife, she thought they might help people in other cars see when our doors were open, so they wouldn't slam into them and tear them off the SUV. My response was posed in a two part question... In the 19 years we've been married, how many car/truck/SUV doors have we lost by not having the special little lights? And, how many times has she heard of this happening in the real world?

Her only recollection was she saw it happen in All-State Insurance commercial once.

BMW Heated Steering Wheel is Awesome

The heated steering wheel in my X5 is fantastic. I bought one 7 years ago and it has become my favorite $130 option ever made. I know the Cayenne heated wheel is "automatic" and shuts off once the interior reaches a certain temperature (I considered a Cayenne three years ago). The X5 wheel is better because I just push a button on the steering wheel and it stays on as long as I want no matter what the temperature is in the vehicle. I don't know how the Mercedes version works, but I simply love my heated steering wheel (I replaced my 2001 X5 with a 2005 X5 almost three years ago).

I am only lurking here until I decide if my next vehicle will be a GL, X5, or Jeep GC SRT8. Unfortunately, the SRT8 does not have the heated steering wheel (but it is truly a beast).

Good to see another "Foot" on the board.

Just curious, do your hands get sweaty at all?

My wife has the heated wheel in her Range Rover and swears by it but she also always wears gloves in the cold so I don't get that but she says it really makes a difference. I chose the wood wheel in my 450 for appearance and decided that I'd rather have that feature to look at most of the year than a limited time needed for the heated wheel. I drive holding the spokes anyway and don't grip the wheel so it wouldn't matter for me if it was heated. The wood wheel is beautiful especially if you get the leather interior as the wood matches the darker wood used with that. I have the illuminated sills and yes it is a "cool" factor but cool is cool and I like looking at them when dark, no useful function otherwise I can think of. Just my $.02. Have fun building the 550!

Have both the heated wheel and heated seats.............on a cold winter day, the feel of the warm leather is very, very nice!

Just a point. If you like the look of the wood wheel, you cannot have both-i'm not in a cold climate so i opted for the wood...i do wish, however, that i had been able to get heated REAR seats without the heating package, so check that for 08.

The wood wheel really sets off the interior ambiance...you have plenty of leather to grab if the wood is too cold.

The sills look great and add to the "look" but they will cost you at least $550 or so...strictly for looks.

The GL550 comes with heated front and rear seats standard along with a wood/leather steering wheel. The heated leather steering wheel can be substituted for the wood/leather at no cost...GL550 only

The lighted door sills are for the cool factor only, but they do add a touch of class. Check this link for a couple of pictures of them: https://mbworld.org/forums/showpost....0&postcount=40

I have both the heated steering wheel and the illuminated door sills.

The heated wheel is like power windows...it is a convenience and luxury that once you have it you will not do without.

The door sills are totally about being cool. They are not useful except to look cool. They glow at night in a neat blue color and are only on the front door sills. I could do without this but my daughter and her friends think they are the best part of the truck.

I know the reaction to the door sills. Most nearly everyone who gets into my car comments on them.

The wood wheel looks great, but the wood feels too much like hard plastic to me and it's right where I grab. I'll go for the heated leather.
