Okay, I'd like to have a group of folks go with me from Alpine, AZ to Safford on US 191, a winding road with no rails that goes through some of the best, most beautiful pine forest in Arizona (including the Apache national forest).

I don't know when or how right now (it's three hours or more from Phoenix to Alpine alone, then at least four hours on that road), but I think it'd be a great time and some gorgeous views from the seat of a GL!

Having ridden this several times on motorcycle, I agree it's a great motorycle road. Think it will be just "work" in a GL and only passengers will see any scenery, but still a nice experience I bet.

This, of course, is the "devil's highway" as it was formerly 666.

Steve,

When are you thinking of doing this... I might tag along if the timing works out...

That is a great road. The last time I drove it, a UPS truck passed me like I was sitting still. Beown really moves when it is close to quitting time.

One suggestion, how about driving the road south to north. It would be a lot easier on the brakes, since you would be gaining in altitude, instead of descending.

I don't know when I'm planning to take the trip, I'm open to suggestions. The idea of going Safford to Alpine's just as valid to me as Alpine to Safford, but maybe it's too long a road? Is there something closer in to Phoenix that'd be fun, good scenery, maybe a little easier? I just read a few things about 191 and thought it'd be a fun challenge in a car made for a little bit more on-road than my LX470 was.

89A to Jerome is a fun road. Not super long, but lots of turns. I've ridden that several times on my motorcycle. Some of the turns are so sharp, I swear you see your tail light coming around a turn.
