Negotiating for 320 w/1k Deposit

I made the plunge months ago with my $1000 deposit, and my 2008 GL320 is now in final prep. The 320 is Black (NM), P1 package, Voice Control, Running boards, etc. I know the Invoice price for my vehicle, but I'm not sure how much the dealer may be willing to deal given the demand for the vehicle and the fact that I already have $1k invested. Any tips or thoughts? (Especially if you have been successful or unsuccessful in a similar situation)

If you're an optimist, you can hope for maybe $1k over invoice...but in these days you'll be lucky if you can get them to split the markup...also, I know it doesnt happen very often, but think about the sales person, he/she has to survive as well...that being said, good luck with your purchase, you will enjoy your GL320

My experience is this; the dealer had a vehicle on the lot, without a couple of things I would've liked and with miles put on it by some LPGA golfers. Because of this and a decent credit rating, I got a couple thousand off the 320 and a great interest rate on a short-term loan. 320's aren't very common in either the GL or ML flavor, so finding one now that's on the lot or a 2007 leftover is going to be tough to start with.

This is a great vehicle and I feel very lucky to have gotten some cash off just before the SoL event, but it is worth pretty close to what they're asking, IMHO.

You should be able to get 2% off MSRP without too much trouble.

This is not a criticism but more a comment on purchasing a car. I never heard of placing a deposit before negotiating a price for the car. That puts the dealer in a positive position...he has a hot vehicle to sell if you bail out and he has your deposit also. You have no bargaining power at all...if he says MSRP and you bail, the worst he can do is make a $1000 and still sell the car.

No one knows what the best you can do is...make him an offer $1K over invoice and work up from there. Force him to counter.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I'm in Texas and just put my deposit on an 08 320cdi, P1 and a few other things... I worked $2200 off sticker. They are in high demand, and the ones I looked at last week werent available. If I waited any longer, I may not get the one I want and end up paying more for one later with options I didn't need.

I sent ya a PM.

I put a $1000 deposit on a Ducati back in November and it finally came in back in May. I knew the price (MSRP plus $900 freight/prep, then TTL)... when I arrived to pick it up, his "new" paperwork had the price about $250 more (he made freight/prep $1150). I KNEW he cold sell this bike within 10 minutes of me telling him to stick it, so I sucked it up and bought it anyway. It wasn't the $$, but that he decided to increase it a tad and he's already getting MSRP plus $900 to take it out of the box.

I heard of guys that put down $8,000 deposits on bikes, then decided against them and the dealers kept the $$$.. Atty's got involved and it turned out to be a "credit" at the dealer, but I've aways assumed a deposit to be non-refundable.

I worked mine then gave him a deposit. Otherwise, it may be understood you are buying at MSRP. If he gives you any BS, just tell him to put your deposit on another truck, but I'm betting he's sticking you with this one.

I'll have to go with El Presidente (Nevada Jack): I have never heard of putting down a deposit without knowing what the deal would be. More to the fact, I have made the deal, given them my trade, paid them the difference, and driven their car for months until mine came in.

I did this when I got my GL 320 (have I mentioned lately that I love it and I am very glad to have ditched a loaded LX 470 with only 14K miles on it when I got the GL, but I digress......)

Anyway, I drove their R class for almost three months while my GL was built. So I locked down the deal, ditched my LX, and put miles on their car while I waited.

I got a bit over two percent off sticker as well, but then I turned around and bought all the extra warranty stuff they pushed. So they did pretty well with me.

If you can knock two percent off, you will be doing well.

Next time, don't give them cash until you've done the deed.

No matter how much you pay, you'll love your GL.

Congrats!!!

I put a grand down half a year before the SC430 came out and was in a very high position in the Phoenix area, something like the third or fourth car because of it. The car came in, I said I didn't like it, and I got a credit back on my card. Now maybe the fact that I'd purchased three vehicles there over the years, combined with the fact that the guy in the next position was going to get his car early (and so on), factored into it, but there was never a question about it.

I ordered an 08 320 back in April and took delivery from Houston North in late July. I was able to negotiate 2K off MSRP before placing the order.
