Optional Products Offers at Purchase

I picked up my GL550 on Saturday and they offered a bunch of optional products ranging from extending the warranty, adding Lojack, chroming the wheels, etc. If I opted for the whole package they put in front of me, it would have totaled almost $13,000. I didn't get any of it.

One product I wanted to ask folks about is what they call the Surface Protection Product: PP/Diamond Fusion

Description is: Protects paint against fading, oxidation and loss of gloss. Fabric resists all water and oil based stains. Protects leather from fading, cracking, and discoloration. Patented Nanotechnology makes windshield TEN times stronger.

At almost $2000 for this package, I quickly passed it up, but are there off-the-shelf products I should be using to achieve some of the above?

Nevada Jack, you mentioned that you had your GL550 waxed soon after you got it-- is there any particular type of wax we should use?

Thanks much,
Scott

Voy2k,

I am assuming you got your GL from Fletcher Jones. If you did, I bought mine from Fletcher Jones in Las Vegas and got the Perma Plate exterior and interior protection package for around $600. I am assuming this is what they are trying to sell you. They started out at $995 and I told them it was only worth $500 to me. We settled at $585 or something like that which was worth it to me but at $2,000 it would not be. I got it because of my kids.

The windshield protection package was also around $500-$600 but I passed since I have a contact who can get me replacement windshields fairly cheap.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

It does indeed BeanCounter, thanks. And yes, it was Fletcher Jones. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal- nice job. I didn't even think to negotiate on it.

Anyone know of similar treatments w/out the Mercedes premium on them?

I was offered some type of "diamond" protection for my windshield.. $795 replaces my windshield if its cracked/chipped unlimited times for 4 years (or thats what I was told).

I may do it (picking up truck this week), sounds pretty cheap for a MB windshield, and my parents own a body shop. lol

He also told me the BlueTooth "puck" was $600.... sounded steep, not sure if my Treo 755 is compatible (he said some Sprint phones wont transfer the phonebook)...

IMO, 13K for a protection package sound a bit too steep. That's almost 16% of car's cost assuming you got the car at 80K. My wife's Volvo had this paint and upholstery protection for 5 years for 500 bucks. We didn't use it even once.

Im sure he meant everything he was offered (at time of sale) was $13k, not just the protection package.

Paint protection is BS. I worked at dealerships (looooong time ago) and I know wax is wax...

I don't know about this Diamond stuff, my dealer said it was windshield only. I wouldnt worry about your paint fading in the first 20 or so years, and Leather will always crack. If they will replace it for free IF IT does crack, then it may be a bargain, but your leather won't crack for 10 years.

Any of those packages are big profit for the dealers. The only one I think that is worth considering is the Tire/Wheel insurance. The AMG rims will be expensive to replace and the large tires do not come cheap either. The other stuff is nothing but profit. You can have any of that stuff done at your discretion as needed. The extended warranty depends on how long you intend to keep the vehicle or if you really pile up the miles

I don't remember saying I had my GL550 waxed after I got it. I have a car detailed with wax done about once a year. I don't keep cars too long and with the new paint and nano applications at the factory, protection extras are a waste of money. A good application of something like Zaino by yourself or a good detailer will provide all the protection you need. KarDon can fill you in on the details if he is monitoring this thread.

BTW...I don't buy anything from FJ. My SA takes great care of me for service but when it comes to sales I pass.

Yesterday, we also ran into the multitude of optional insurances we could buy when we settled on our GL 320. It was quite a shock; shocked that there were so many available and shocked at the price.

MB already uses nano-technology in its paints to provide a durable and lasting finish.

A few months ago there was a thread on car waxes, polishes, finishes and the one web site that was mentioned was:

http://classic-motoring.stores.yahoo.net/index.html

It offers Menzerna products: Menzerna is the largest supplier of polishes and compounds to Germany's automakers. I am sure that there are other products that do as well.

1. Absolutely major profit for the dealer. I know, I once worked sales for a Pontiac/GMC dealership.

2. I have used Zaino on my Corvettes and now on my GL ...... there are probably other products as good but absolutely none better! The shine and the protection will be as good, and I believe better, than anything the dealer does and will cost no more than $80 for the products (Zaino ) and your time.
