General Alert - Email Warning

It appears that Danno 4x4's email address has been hacked. If you receive an email purporting to be Danno's Yahoo account, purportedly from West Africa, please be aware that a similar hack was accomplished on Hotmail.com in August. (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08...l_hijack_scam/) I tried calling Danno's number and it is possible that he actually is out of town, but anyone who's read his posts should know that he speaks much better English than that and he would hardly be traveling to Africa considering the current situation with his family.

Thank you for your time,

Steve

PS I know, I finally found a way to use the word "purportedly" in public. Thanks!

Thanks for the phone call Steve-O... I got several today...

I was half way up to Flagstaff, when I got an email from myself indicating that I was in West Africa and in need of some money.

I went ahead and checked my wallet, and realized that I had plenty of money... And the GPS said I was still in Arizona.

I got on the horn to a friend who sent in the request for Yahoo to put my account on lock down...

The good part is, that the Yahoo address is only one of a few accounts that I use for email... so there was no info actually in the account that could have been compromised. It appears that only folks that were saved in my address book got the emails.

I guess that they just decided to pick on me today... I am not too surprised that they got into my account... My password was too easy to figure out. The next one won't be though.

The funny thing is that several folks gave me a call and were ready to come to my aid... The only give away was that the written English was so bad that it was quite obvious that it was not written by a native speaker...

None the less, I hope that I can serve as the example... If they would have taken the time to get the english to sound right, some of my friends may have been out some money. Make your passwords more difficult to crack than I did!

Here is a copy of the email that was sent out:

Subject: Emergency !!!!!( Please i need your Help Ugently)

Not wanting to make light of the stealing of the email address, but you have to admit the letter is hilarious to read.

alert

My ISP left an email relay open and some scum sucking, gutless, piece of horse manure managed to sneak in blast out a major load of spam. Now I have to go clean up

Spammers suck.

Good to hear that you weren't affected, Dan. And, yes, the email is hilarious. If I saw that from you, Dan, I would have sent 5K instead of 3 they were asking for

Need... Well... Not really but if anyone is feeling particularly generous I would be happy to accept donations toward my Breast Cancer 3-Day walk coming up in less than a month during the first weekend in November

Dan, I was wondering about that. For some reason, I thought you had already done it. I guess you are waiting until the heat eases before you wander in the desert for 3 days.

Still in the Future, and coming up soon... Its the weekend of November 2, 3, and 4. I started my fund raising early this year. But you are right... Now that it has cooled off a bit out here it should be a great weekend

STEVE, thanks for the donation, your generosity is most sincerely appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Oh, dear, well thank you - I wasn't going to say anything here. Lost my wife's mother to breast cancer, and the kids' nanny to inflammatory breast cancer (a completely different beast that's only now being properly diagnosed, sadly), so it was the least I could do.
