GL 550 21" CHROME Wheels

I know Chicky said that you "upgrade" the 550's wheels to chrome (anywhere from $1600-$2500) at the dealer. Hopefully we'll soon see pics!

I know they have 20" Chrome wheels for the 450 but has anyone else seen the 21's for the 550 in chrome? Any links you can provide? Someone else posted in another thread a group out in LA that can "chrome" any wheel with a special copper/nickel/chrome process for like $175 per wheel.

I was more interested in whether anyone has seen MB issued chrome 21's.....or chrome 21's that fit the 550's specs and that can be "badged" with the "star".

I don't believe that MB makes any wheels chrome. I could be wrong but check the accessory catalog, BYO site, etc.

Concur. All the chrome wheels I ever saw on deliveries were locally chromed MB wheels or option wheels as provided and coordinated by the dealer.

That appears to be correct.

I spoke with the service dept yesterday and what they are going to do for me is chrome the stock 21" wheels that came on the vehicle.

I am also considering a set of aftermarket 22" asantis. It would require new tires (obviously) and about $7,000.

Saw a dark green 450 yesterday with the MB wheels chromed...I should have chased him down and asked where he got them!

I am a huge fan of shiney wheels, always have been.

What is the status of your chrome wheels?

I've decided to get the OEM wheels chromed. My dealer indicates there is a wait of 4-6 wks with the outfit they use so I'll be waiting awhile to get them.

If you considering selling your 21” wheels I may buy them from you.

This is a wheel swap...so I have to give them my old wheels. That's why it's only costing me $1,450.

These are the 21" AMG wheels from the 550? If so then you will not be doing a wheel exchange like Chicky, right? What kind of price are they charging you if you don't mind providing it?

MBUSA now does offer OEM chrome wheels... I know for a fact it is available on the M-class and I believe the S-class.

They are chroming my own wheels. I am driving on 18" loaners.

wheels $700.00
caps 100.00
mount 100.00
sensors 100.00
barrel prep 300.00
LA tax 74.25

total 1374.25

I opted to have the inside polished and preped for full chrome. The wheels are so large and exposed I wanted the entire wheel shiny.

Speaking of shiny, has anyone found a good product to remove the brake dust and other dirt from the rims and keep it off for a decent interval. I have used various brands from the local auto parts store. They all seem to work pretty well on removal, but the wheels (especially front of course) are dirty in a few days. And this is without any rain on the roads; in Raleigh, we will all soon be planting cactus.

That is really quite reasonable! I (as well as others) will be interested in seeing pics and hearing your comments about how the final product looks.

I never use chrome wheel cuz it adding weight to the wheel. The factory 18" wheel already weighted at 70 lbs. Why add more weight since it already heavy. IMOP

Jack! Don't do it. Unless you want some weak 21 inch AMG wheels.

Don't get concerned...I like a black car with chromes but I don't think you can really improve on the AMG wheel on the 550. If the pics blew me off the road then I may consider it but really not much chance of that.

I just gave my baby a bath and I must say that I find the AMG wheels extremely easy to clean. Keeping them clean is another story altogether though.

Indeed. I think I'll be ordering the aftermarket brake pads soon, so that I can keep the brake dust down.

I always say that if you want the car to stop (which brakes are made for) then stay with the "dust" produced by the MB pads. If MB does anything well it is knowing how to stop 2 1/2 tons of car in the shortest distance possible. To save a little dust and risk reducing your stopping distance is not worth a guess on replacement of the brake pads.
