scraping noise when shifting P ---> D?

I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, I must admit, I did not search!

When shifting in/out of park to drive, I hear a scraping type noise. Is this normal? Do the rest of you hear this?

To me, it almost sounds like a sudden release of air or maybe a tire squeaking on the concrete, but yes I've noticed it as well. Then again, just opening the door to the GL seems to set in motion a bunch of little noises like it's getting ready for me!

Yes, isn't that funny?! Sometimes I walk by and it's making this or that noise...kind of like Kit car on Knight Rider...but not as ugly??

Anyway...I feel better now and I won't worry about.

Actually I wasn't that worried before, but I need some more posts for my membership.

Perfectly normal and, yes, I was very puzzled too when I first got my GL. Couldn't believe that a car so fancy would make such a noise on purpose. Tested 5 new GLs on the lot and they all make the same noise.

Chicky,

I had always wondered about this too, but my mind was put at ease when in Vegas I heard this little screeching sound everytime the group put their GL's into drive. Pretty funny.

Don't have my car yet, pick up tomorrow! But could it be the automatic door locks. That noise is similar to that on my ford with the auto locks.

No, it's definitely the transmission. You'll hear it tomorrow.

By the way, have a great time tomorrow picking up your new ride!

I can see it now around your house tonight, like that Disney commercial where the kids are jumping around the night before going to Disney World, "We're too excited to sleep!"

Be sure and take some delivery pictures and include shots that show off some of the options you got if you can. I don't know why, but we all seem to love to look at each other's GLs, even though they're all basically the same model.

Yes pics for sure with comments! I have observed the MO here on the forum and would be severely shamed by proxy I am sure, if there were no pics.

thanks to all for all your insight and counseling, especially on the "scraping noise"!

Kind regards!

i haven't heard it. I do notice it will make noise or "jar" itself if the truck is still in motion when I shift it the other direction.

not really any "lag" like in my other vehicles. you better be stopped when you switch gears. lol

Same transmission is used in cars like the E-class, where there's direct linkage from a floor shifter.

Obviously the column mount stalk on the GL is not mechanically linked to the transmission. Rather it electrically controls a solenoid mounted at the transmission, which is what we hear.

Since the GL has plenty of ground clearance, the noise is not muffled by proximity to the ground.

I hear air pressure sounds when I walk away from it in the garage. I like to think it is taking a deep sigh and resting until I come back again for more fun. Sort of like putting my dog in his kennel when I leave the house!

I had not noticed this sound - I will pay closer attention tomorrow. The consensus here appears to be that its a standard symptom of the transmission.

I also don't hear any noise but that could be my hearing. I will listen extra hard but I have heard nothing.

Yes, I hear it in my GL320, and I heard it first in the R350 I drove for three months while my GL was being built.
