No RDS?

I don't listen to radio stations/satellite much but I noticed the GL Command doesn't support RDS. How can a 2008 vehicle costing over $80K with a "premium" sound system not have such a basic feature?

Pardon my ignorance but what is RDS? Since I don't know what it is I don't really miss it...:-)

I have this on my 2002 330i BMW, it displays the station name, as well as the artist and song. I am also a bit surprised that the system in the GL does not have this feature, however, I am more shocked that the navigation does not have real-time traffic display. The Germans are always one step behind the Japanese and Americans in electronic gadgets, and one to two steps in front in driving dynamics. Can't have it all I guess.

Keep in mind the COMAND technology in the GL, R and ML is all probably 3-5 years old. The features you mention are now in the S and new C class (RDS I don't know) and will surely be in the other models as they are face-lifted or new MY designs are introduced.

You can get the artist and song by pressing the INFO softkey.

Yes I also think MB takes a while to catch on what is and what is not important in marketing in the US...cup holders is the famous example...:-) You are correct that "driving dynamics" and safety items are on the top of their list.

Only in Sirius, not in AM/FM. Or WX band. (Why would you want it in WX band anyway? Silly question.)

In Sirius, is there a way to keep the info up when you switch stations. Command reverts back to station name when you switch stations and you have to push the info button again.

You've hit on my greatest frustration Jon.

From a previous thread on this topic, it appears that the command cannot be programmed to provide the info as you switch between stations. I know... what a royal pain!

Really. I don't really need the huge CLSREWIND on the command screen-the smaller channel id with the artist and song would be great. It seems like a perfect opportunity for a software upgrade fix since the hardware can obviously perform this function.

I think we need to find one good, brave hacker out there.

It shouldn't be much of a hack, because the information that you are looking for is standard on the S class. I have a 2007 and it is there.

Totally different generation COMAND's on the GL and S. What works on one will not necessarily work on the other even with a hack of some kind.

I know. I find it hilarious that they display the station name so large, as if that is what is important.

I think those background pictures (speakers,satellite,phone...) are annoying and totally unnecessary.

RDS? My 2002 Trailblazer had that.
I think that the Command system is a total joke. Really. I haven't once used the NAV, as it lacks most of the adresses I try to throw at it. To top that off, the map resolution is pretty cruddy. I think for a 70K vehicle, it should have a better NAV system than my 07 Civic... Or at least maybe have a touch screen? In my opinion, the Command unit it one of the weakest spots of the GL, for me at least.

I'm done now...

+1. It's CD or Sirius for me.

Agreed. The screen's low resolution doesn't help these cheesy images either.

I believe the 7th word was "brave". Doing it on someone else's GL is not brave. Therefore, I am not brave!
