Cool South Florida - Delray Beach

Filled up at Wal Mart last night. List price $3.47 but get a 3 cent discount for using their credit card. So I paid $3.44. Still cost $50+ but of course you get 625+/- per tank.

What I don't understand is the price of diesel does not fluctuate like gasoline does. Gas can go up and down 2, 3, 5 cents every few days and diesel will not move for days on end . I'm pretty sure at one time diesel was just considered junk and the price was below gas. But maybe now they do all sorts of refining so we get the short end of the stick. Oh well they did make the engines and the fuel burn more efficiently!!!!

$3.69 at Speedway in Columbus, Ohio. Two weeks ago, though, at the same station, it was "only" $3.46.

Oh, that's not fair - we're tremendously spoiled compared to UK pricing. Last I checked, regular diesel in the UK was up around $11.00/US per US gallon.

Costco's Amex credit card rebates 5% at any gas station. In California that will be 20 cents a gallon any day with wholesale fuel up another nickle this morning.

I was unaware of this - is it just at gas stations, or is this part of the whole "cash back" system they have? Because I tend to use my airline mileage card with most purchases and save Amex for inside Costco. If there's an additional 5% for gas, I'll switch!

5% for gas up to 75 gallons per purchase
3% for eating out
1% for everything else including Costco

The card is the Costco Amex small business true savings card.

Ahh. Mine says "American Express Platinum Cash Rebate," and the membership type is "Exec." (For "Executive," clearly) I'll have to check on what rebates I get for what.

Thank you,

Even when the diesel is $0.50 more than premium it is more efficient. By about $0.04 a mile better if the 450 is getting 18 and the 320 is getting 26. That's a savings of $480 over 12k miles. The 320 would have to get 20 mpg compared to 18 for the 450 for it to wash... Seems smart to me.

Now if our Costco's would carry diesel we'd be on to something!

Filled up at WalMart last night $3.62 less 3 cents for charging with their card, $3.59. Every penny helps. I still don't understand why diesel prices don't change as fast as gas does. I'm not sure if that is good or bad!!

Diesel is now officially a "boutique" fuel, like the fuel many places require in the summer. That is, like the gasolines that require this or that specific additive for the summer months, which varies from state to state or even city to city, because it takes more processing to create ULSD it becomes more expensive. And with a significantly smaller population using diesel, particularly in urban areas, it seems like station owners are only willing to carry the dark stuff if they can get the maximum profit out of it. It takes a different tank with a different pump and nozzle attached to it (Danno, any comment?), and in some cases it occupies a position of its own on that island if the owner doesn't opt for an expensive multi-hose machine. Where it doesn't make sense is in Europe, where everyone has diesel. But that's Europe, eh?

By the way, I found a very cool Windows Vista "gadget" from MSN that posts gas prices in my area. It only shows unleaded on the gadget itself (lowest, average, highest) but if you click on it, it brings up a list of all the stations that report in the area, and many have diesel fuel. You have to scroll to find it, but I'm impressed at how many are in the are and how the prices range from reports yesterday and today, from $3.659 to $3.959. Useful!
