Question No gas guzzler

Why is there no gas guzzler tax on the GL550? I've had to fork 3k on my other vehicles living in Cali so I'm really confused.

Feedback much appreciated.

I think because it is a truck and has a gvwr which is exempt.

Gas Guzzler tax doesn't apply to SUVs. Sounds ridiculous but it is what it is.

Thanks GL-krew. That is nonsensical, but good news.

If anyone know if this will change in the near future then please speak up. Will want to beat the tax when changing

The gas guzzler tax originated with the Energy Tax Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-618), and the IRS issued the first regulations to implement it in 1980. It applies to domestic sales of automobiles by manufacturers and importers, who are required to pay the tax. IRC section 4064(b) defines an automobile as any “four-wheeled vehicle propelled by fuel which is manufactured primarily for use on public streets, roads, and highways.”

The key to the tax was it applied to automobiles, not light trucks. If the Dems take over the big house on PA Avenue, I'll bet the GG tax is extended to light trucks.

I remember when the new gas mileage law was passed recently that there was discussion about including SUV's (light trucks) in the law. Whether it was sustained the final bill and made law I do not know.
