Help - I'm trying to decide with my wife which SUV to get.

Your thoughts on the pros and cons....I know you all might be a bit bias toward the MB...why did you choose your GL instead of the others?

My choice of a GL450 boiled down to nightmare reports affiliated with a Rovers reliability. The local Range Rover dealer also had a less than stellar reputation in service. The GL's ride was more "carlike" and actually had a tighter turning radius than a Nissan Maxima or a Lexus 330. Better mileage would now drive me to a diesel, but for speed, handling and reliability the GL has my vote.

In our case, there was no other.

It was the only one with a diesel in it.

Just sold my 07MY RRS in February - I had a GL420 on loan for just 1 day in January and can confirm the GL interior is far superior to the RRS. The RRS interior is pretty poor compared to most 4x4's in my opinion and although it has a nice combined '4x4' & 'cockpit' driving position it lacks the quality you should expect from a premium vehicle.

From a general quality point of view I had no problems with my RRS at all - 18 months and 16k miles without one warranty issue - it was very reliable.

The RRS is undoubtably a great offroad car, looks very nice and is defintely still a head turner however it just doesn't have the quality feel it deserves - if you want RR then I'd look at a FFRR instead (or maybe its too big). Thats a another good point, the RRS isn't very big. We came from a Touareg into the RRS and were amazed at how small the RRS actually is for a visually looking big motor.

For me, the GL is another class up from the RRS

Interesting perspective. Never heard anyone say that the RRS doesn't have a quality feel. Just looking at the interiors and being in them for a few mintues I'd say the Benz interiors aren't even close to either Range Rover model. Materials and especially in design the Benz interiors seems generic as hell next to the RR/RRS IMO. Interesting to see someone say otherwise with such conviction.

FFRR interior is superb - RRS interior is just inferior in comparison

The Range Rover is the ONLY other luxury SUV that has the maximum 4wd capability (requirement for me) that is also available as an option on the GL450. The Range Rover cost more and has had a history of mechanical issues...........so for me, the GL450 with the "off road package" was the clear choice and I have not regreted that decision after 17,000 miles of driving. Not one issue so far!

Looking at both, i think the quality look and feel are there in the RR, but to me, there are too many buttons and knobs and it simply looks too busy. Not as elegantly simple.

I went thru the same thing.

RRS - No 3rd Row, small interior, cooler "look" I think, 12 mpg gets old fast at $3.50 per gallon. Nearest RR dealer is 120 miles away, not too many around if you travel.

320 - 3rd row, auto folding rear, more room all around over the RRS, about 10-12 mpg MORE than the RRS on any given day.

450 - same as 320, just doesn't get the mileage.

A) Diesel
B) Diesel
C) I know too many RR owners who have "stories."

Diesel was the key driver for us. To us GL is much better looking car compared to RR.

I've had a '05 RR TD6 Vogue (all options included) with the 3 litre BMW diesel. And I can't think of anything that was better in the RR than the GL. The interior might look nicer, depending on personal taste, but the quality did not match a car that expensive. Functionality wise I think the interior in the GL is actually better. I owned the RR for 2 years, and had quite a few visits to the shop. Lots of big and minor problems (list too long for this forum), some of them the service reps couldn't even fix during the 2 years. Actually the knowledge of the service reps was another reason why I sold the car. Really bad. Read a RR forum and you'll see what I mean. One of the problems I think RR (or Land Rover) has is the continious change of ownership. And with that the service line often follows. The car I had was designed by BMW, with BMW parts and engines. The reviced version has Ford parts and engines (so does the RRS). What's next? Now the company is sold to India. I do not think I will be tempted to buy any LR product again. The GL have been really good. One minor problem in 16 months, not bad at all. I have had quite a few cars (various BMW's, Audi's, Jaguar, Porche, MB's, but never japanese) and the cars I miss most after they're sold have been the MB's. At least that is something in favour of MB.

Without question must me a diesel, then must be a Mercedes without question, then with 3 kids only the GL without question can well acomodate a family of five and cargo.

I have the FFRR and I would push you in that direction if you go with Range Rover (even if it is used). It also depends on your opinion of appearance and feel. IMHO, the MB interior is nicer than the RR but the RR exterior is nicer than the MB.

I love my Range Rover but like the GL also and would definitely consider one for my wife. At the end of the day it comes down to what YOU like most.
