Transmission selector problem

We had intermittent problem with our transmission selector. This happened 3 times in last week and a half. We could not shift the car into either drive or reverse. Had to turn off the engine and restart to clear the system and then it would work fine. One time it would not shift to either drive or park position from reverse, again turned off the car and restarted to clear the problem.
Dealer checked it out today and did infact find fault codes indicating problem in solenoids which shift transmission system to drive, reverse or park. Evidently these are the very same solenoids which make that hissing sound every time we shift tranmission from park to drive or reverse. Parts ordered hope to have car back tomorrow. In the mean time driving a fine luxury minivan called R350

Well..... I said luxury minivan not "luxury" minivan.... or is it the word minivan that gets me into trouble? should I have said crossover?..

Well, when I made some comments about how the R wasn't, shall we say, my cup of tea, I had troulbe sitting down until the chew-marks on my hind end went away. I'd think it's the "minivan" comment.

A sensitive bunch, they are.

2013 GL450
Ironically, we had to put our GL450 in the shop today for the same problem. We were in Little Rock and the transmission hung and would not shift. I pulled in a driveway and turned the vehicle off and it reset. I called the dealer in Little Rock and he had a repalcement car waiting. He said while he had it, he wanted to replace the airmatic system with upgraded parts and the perform recall on the hitch. The fault codes indicated the transmission fluid control value or something was malfunctioning.
We love the vehicle, but have spent more time in the shop with the GL in the last 6 months than I spent in four years owing an Escalade. I swear all we did was change the oil. I thought at the same price of an Escalade, why not drive a Mercedes..after all they are German engineered?
Replaced 4 cam sensors ( one at a time!!) Replaced the airmatic compressor, one nail in the sidewall of a tire, now the hitch and the transmission.
We just exhanged the alloy rims on the GL through a chrome exchange and it looks awesome, so I hope this is the end of our trouble.

The R class looked far better with all clear glass as previewed in it's concept form as the Vision GST ( Grand Sport Tourer ) at various auto shows in 2002 - a very modern take on the uber-large station wagon/small SUV.




When the production version appeared with the dark tinted glass , it became and looked like any other generic minivan, as the beauty of the flowing roofline was totally lost,in my opinion .
