Tow Bar?? Help

I have had a tow bar and electrics fitted today to my GL, the bar is made by Witter.

Upon collection I have been given back the whole of the rear end behind the bumper crash bar, a box section steel section that wraps around behind the bumper the full width of the car.

The fitters tell me that this must come off to fit the new bar, is this correct as if so my whole back end has no crash protection apart from a 2ft section in the middle where the new hith frame is fitted, is this right?

From your description, I am not convinced that your fitter is right.

That does not sound right. i do not think your fitter has the right tow bar for your vehicle.

I did some more digging on the net.

Please see the attached link, it quite clearly shows the crash bar being placed in the trash in picture 2, still doesn't seem right to me!

Most guys here are from Canada or US and the drawbar style is different here, but it looks to me from reading the fittment instructions that they have done the right thing...

Yep, It looks like for the European style tow bar, it actually replaces the bumper crash bar. In the US, the receiver mount actually attaches below the bumper, so it is a bit different.

In looking at the Westfalia document, I thought that the most interesting part was on page 5, where it looks like it is indicating to be sure to "Polish Your Knob" HA!

Now that is Teutonic documentation.
