Fear of the Dark Side
Well, here it is, straight up - Ford's making a 65mpg car. That they won't sell here. Because they don't think people will buy it, even if they work out the economics on it (right now the engines are being built in the UK).
This despite the fact that even Honda and Nissan are making noises about bringing diesels here.

Read it 'n weep.

Canadians are sooo desperate for diesels, there are now hundreds of grey-market right-hand drive diesel trucks in my town alone... yet we get lumpped in with a market that dosen't want 'em.
Check it out. whih the exception of the '87s none of these were sold here...

Not everything about the article is weak and the "fear of diesel" has some merit.
It's probably also likely the car cannot be reengineered to meet USA crash safety regulations as well.
Nice to take a swipe at diesel, but of course politically incorrect to suggest exemption from safety regs--as president of GM has recently attempted.

In any event, Ford is indeed ramping up diesel in North America, perhaps to avoid the "high labor costs in Britain" as noted in the article.
